Love this book. The author did a great job providing several different forms of root cellaring and comprehensive instructions on how to build and maintain them. Everything from building an out building, to using an old refrigerator. Plenty of sketches and photos. They include lists of produce that is easy to store, and how to store it. Also included is plenty of recipes.

This is a great wealth of information for anyone interested in seed saving and heirloom fruits and vegetables. I have also been reading "The Plant Propagator's Bible" to further my nurseryman skillz.

I've had time to read select chapters of this book, and one thing is for sure, there is tons of information on being prepared in a crisis situation. I have come to the conclusion that I am not prepared at all, and I do have a Emergency Evacuation Kit. I feel that to be as prepared as this book details, you would have needed to start gathering items 20 years ago and would have spent thousands of dollars in doing so. This book is very infomative, but you will need to decide what you think your most imminent crises would be, and then tailor your kit to that. In reading this book, I feel that the things I have prepared would be very inadequate at best. All in all, I would recommend this book for a detailed list of supplies to have on the ready.

I've been familiar with Eliot Coleman's work for a few years now. I found an interesting article in Mother Earth News, 2004, regarding his daughter, Clara, and her attempts at gardening in the winter. It peaked my curiosity, so I saved the article. I have yet to get myself organized enough to attempt what she did, but I took it another step and purchased this particular book so that I would have more step-by-step help. Still, yet, I'm not quite brave enough to try, but if I can't do it with the help of this awesome book, I shouldn't waste my time!! The book is simple to understand, has perfectly understandable drawings to go by, and has about all the information one would need to be a success. I live in Central Maine and can't wait to be picking spinach and other greens in the cold of ... Read More

Book is an easy resource for self sufficiency, however the techniques are a bit dated. Recommended for traditional gardening techniques and farming, canning etc.

I received this book last week and finished it last night. It is an invaluable resource for finding water, purifying it for drinking, and more. However, I was hoping for more information on how to prepare for this event and more importantly from my perspective...how to prepare to stay warm in the winter. I think another reader had a very good point in that it doesn't seem that this book really covers the topic of how to find food in an emergency adequately. I was most appreciative of how the author laid out the beginning of the book and how through the water sections were.

Of course, there is some good information that will help a lot, if you put it into practice. But as another reviewer said, there's too much funk.

I don't think this book was written, necessarily for a certain age group or demographic. It seems to have been written for a certain personality, like those that still read old issues of Mad Magazine.

Once again, there's content here that could be helpful. But as for the presentation, "To each his own said the farmer as he kissed the cow."

It is a pretty good book for showing you the mechanics of how to build and maintain different areas of the farm. It gives good information on how to raise different livestock. It is not something you would want to just read right through and go start a farm. It is more like something you could look at whenever you need some tips. The best way to learn how to start a farm would be to see if you could work on somebody you know's farm. Either just to help out or for an actual job.
