This book should convince you of a new paradigm. We do not live in a world of bacteria that are trying to invade and kill us. We live in a an self-made environment of bacteria that have a stake in our survival, and that protect us from potentially harmful disease. Our use and overuse of antibiotics is changing our individual bacterial ecosystems for the worse, hence the rise of multiply-drug-resistant microorganisms.

Sachs illustrates all this with entertaining clarity, then goes on to describe how current scientists are taking legions of bacteria, putting them through the equivalent of a bacterial Olympics, and deploying the winners to restore a healthful personal ecosystem that can rid us of certain illnesses.

Considering the part music plays in the recovery of extremely mentality disabled patients, which is not a new phenomenon, it has recently been explored once again by Oliver Sacks, physician and author, in his new book Musicophilia Tales of Music and the Brain.

There are remarkable examples of patients who were considered feeble, unable to care for themselves, unable to walk or do anything other than sit, and yet these same people when exposed to music were able to astonish those who cared for them either by family or professionals. Sacks explored many different methods of treatment, but in his unique style of writing has been able annotate the case histories of many types of patients who had been virtually given a hopeless life sentence of being institutionalized.

Perhaps there should be a warning on books which incubated as doctoral dissertations. Caution: This book is written research, not researched writing. I had the same reaction to this work as I had to Peter Silver's "Our Savage Neighbors"; it reads like a term paper. The 250 pages of text are supported by 50 pages of densely packed endnotes which would otherwise be very impressive if the reader were not constantly aware of the author's insistence on including in the text every iota of information cited in each endnote. It seems as if each factual assertion is followed by tedious, and eventually mind-numbing, examples of the punitive or corrective action taken by authorities. After a while, the reader suspects that the assertion is made so that the supporting material can be brought to bear, that such statements ... Read More

What has happened to the food over the past 50 years? Plenty. This book outlines in great detail the ol'mighty dollar and its influence on our food chain. Food is no longer food.

This book breaks down in detail what happened (which by the way is never boring) and ways for your family to eat healthy and partake in REAL FOOD.

The advice is sound. This is something you need to read. It is time to understand what has happened to FOOD and in a small way, account for the many alignments we face with modern western diets and the society who eats it.

"Bonk" is funny, enlightening, fascinating and, oddly, sexy in a way. Mary Roach makes her topic speak to the reader in way that keeps interest and makes her work very hard to put down. I will be reading more of Ms. Roach.

Very well written. Not as much detail in some places, but given the scope of the topic, that's forgiveable. It's interesting to note how little we do that will be permanent. Especially modern housing. Great reading!

I found this book almost impossible to put down. In six chapters, the author, a molecular biologist, describes various instances in human history in which some sort of poisoning occurred. Some of these poisonings were purely accidental while others were deliberate, but they all involved the interactions between the human body and the various toxins that can cause it harm. Indeed, one can wonder how the human race has survived for so long in view of all the dangerous substances that can be innocently ingested. The many incidents described span millennia - the latest one having occurred only a couple of years ago. For each case, the author has included the relevant historical information, the aftermath and current understanding of what happened. I found the writing style to be particularly outstanding: it is simple, clear, engaging, authoritative, ... Read More

The nifty phrase of John Randolph of Roanoke seems appropriate.

Why, in a book that spends so much time on national cemeteries and mentions Montgomery Meigs several times, is there a complete omission of the sad and regretful story of how Arlington National Cemetery was created by Meigs as a deliberate affront to prevent the Lee family from ever again living in their home? Was it to avoid the story of the federal government refusing the payment of taxes by third parties and insisting on in-person appearance by Lee? Or the theft of the family furnishings, down to the slaughtering of Lee's daughter's pet pony? Or the visit many years later by Mrs. Lee at her childrens' urging, with her first view so sickening her that, bursting into tears, she would not alight from the carriage and left, never to return?

This is one many great recent 200 page or so science books which are helpful at introducing the subjects they discuss.

In this case, the subjects treated are sex, food consumption, and sleep and dreams.

With reference to the sexual issues, those who find their curiosity peaked by the issues in this book would be well advised to do follow up reading with such books as Dr. Helen Fisher's Why We Love as well as Matt Ridley's The Red Queen and Jared Diamond's Why is Sex Fun?

As it relates to the sleep research could follow this book up with Andrea Rock's very excellent Mind At Night which follows up some of the points made in this book concerning the essential nature of sleep.

As it relates to food consumption this book was a great primer and for me opened up new vistas of thought about what I had previously ... Read More
