2004's "Understanding Terror Networks" is a detailed look at al-Qaeda and its associated networks, the new Mujahedin of radical Islam. Author Marc Sageman is a Doctor of Psychiatry and Sociology, with intelligence and foreign service experience in the effort to expel the Soviets from Afghanistan in the 1980's. Using open source data, he examines a large sampling of information on individual terrorists to determine what makes them tick and how they network. The end result is far more useful than the anecdote-based journalism that fills bookstores.

Sageman documents that the typical Islamic terrorist is a young man from a loving middle class family, often well-educated, who becomes alienated through work or study in a foreign country or even a large city in the Middle East. He ... Read More

A well-written, finely researched book on a critical but otherwise unnoticed player in international terrorism. What is most interesting is Al-Suri's diverse history of terror cell membership and the resulting network of international links he maintained. This book is more than a biography. By reviewing Al-Suri's life, from his ideology, travel and marital choice, the book outlines a blueprint of "serious" terrorists that has been closely mirrored by many other hardcore jihadists in Al-Qa'ida and other groups. Most interesting is Al-Suri's shift from gun-toting combatant to ideological propagandist and his lasting influences. Though Bin Laden is "the face" of modern terrorism, this book leads the reader to question if the most dangerous players have yet to be identified.

If you ever wonder how those terrorists can do what they do this is the book for you. This book is the best one volume catch all book on about every terrorist group that there is. The author does a great job diagnosing what motivates each of those groups he highlights. He puts you into the mind of each group in a short, concise narrative on the group. You can see what motivates them to do what they do. His information is very applicable, right out of the newspaper. He goes over both FARC and PKK. Both groups recently had their chapters of fame in the world's newspapers just within the past month. Through every chapter you can see terrorists aren't like us. Each group is motivated by a slightly different cause. However it is easy to say that they all aren't like the average American. We are fooling ourselves to think ... Read More

The Unmasking Terror series has been a welcome addition to the field of terrorism studies in general and Volume III in this series is another notable contribution to the body of terrorism literature. It is particularly useful in terms of being a handy desk-top reference when you need to get up to speed on the numerous regions of the world where al-Qaeda has been active in recent years. I have bought the previous volumes of the Unmasking Terror series by the Jamestown Foundation and have found this to be an excellent buy for the price. Packed with information, the 550 page book has a lot of detailed analysis for the price. There is really nothing comparable to the Unmasking Terror series in circulation due to the vast number of topics covered in this book.

Like the previous volumes of Unmasking Terror series, Unmasking ... Read More

Let Mr. Scheuer open the door into the world that we find ourselves embroiled in. His insight is invaluable. He has first hand knowledge of what he is talking about and tries to give us his version of the answers to the questions we as citizens should have. You might not like or agree with everything that he says but you should listen and at least roll it around in your head. I look forward to many more books from this author.

RAJESH C. OZA, ANUPAMA R. OZA, and SIDDHARTHA R. OZA

"Growth takes place whenever a challenge evokes a successful response that, in turn, evokes a further and different challenge. We have not found any intrinsic reason why this process should not repeat itself indefinitely, even though a majority of civilizations have failed, as a matter of historical fact."--Arnold J. Toynbee, A Study of History

This piece--co-authored by a middle-aged father, his recently-graduated-from-college daughter, and his college-going son--is a collective engagement with Fareed Zakaria's The Post-American World. The father is anxious about how effectively Americans are utilizing the advantage of world-class universities; the daughter is seeking to address the inequity of unequal access to higher education; and the son is optimistic about his ... The information is presented clearly and succinctly, addressing the questions most frequently asked by Westerners unfamiliar with Islam. The authors appear to have no hidden agenda but simply present their findings. An appendix describes the methodology used. An excellent resource for a dangerous period of history.
