Colonel North is a great story teller. The way he weaves together the stories of the Marines, Soldiers and Airmen in Operation Iraqi Freedom makes for riveting reading. North does an outstanding job providing a cohesive picture of the military operation by weaving together individual stories---action-packed stories---of the men and women that served in this conflict. The Colonel does an excellent job of creating narrative tension. I found myself reading well into the night.

Thank God for good men like Oliver North. I wish we could have more men in power with his faith and his understanding of our military's capabilities and purpose. I am also very thankful for the work being done in Iraq and Afganistan. It is not a finished work nor a perfect work, but it is certainly not a flawed effort as our news outlets lead us to believe. Brining our troops home before they feel they are finished is not "supporting our troups." We need to let the military decide when it is time to come home and stop letting our brilliant politcians and reporters use their deployment as a political leveraging issue. i liked: the author's style was easy and pleasant to read; flowed smoothly. the opening of each chapter begins with a historical quote that is relevant to that chapter's prayer principle. these quotes alone were worth the price of the book. the author tells of his personal experiences, which were very interesting, to illustrate the principle discussed in each chapter. in addition, he also uses stories from other's lives and experiences. all of these stories are engaging, stirring, thought provoking, and relevant to the biblical value being discussed. and to give validity to the value portrayed in each of these stories and principles, the author frequently and consistently draws on bible passages. i disliked: i did not find any aspect of the book that i did not like.

It was reassuring to discover that the leadership of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines took their responsibilities so seriously when preparing to be deployed to Iraq in 2003. Decisions were not made by an arrogant group of American military but rather by people who sought strength from a power admittedly far superior to themselves - God. Between the individual prayers of the marines themselves and prayer chains established across the country, the marines of 2/8 were shielded from any severe casualties. It defies logic that this battalion could have fared so well. After reading this book, perhaps more then once, you can decide for yourself if God really did see them through.

You don't need to fully understand the military to understand and feel the power of this book. Lt. Cash, a chaplain serving with the Marines in Iraq, writes in an easy to read style. His words aren't always easy to read, but they are full of the power of God and the enormity of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I never realized the military was such a spiritual place--yet another reason to continually support our military! I was overwhelmed reading Cash's retelling of the First Battalion, Fifth Marine Regiment's initial push into Baghdad and all the miracles that surrounded the horror of that night. It was like seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time: How could you not believe in God? After reading this book and the Marine's who experienced God's continual protection, He too is "always faithful," just like a Marine.

Col. North does a great job of intermixing strait facts of history with the first hand accounts of the men and women who were there. It really helps bring the historical facts to life. I think this should be required reading for WW2 history classes, and is great reading for any history buff. Added bonus- it comes with a great DVD.

War Stories II is a must have for history buffs or novices alike. First hand accounts along with maps and excellent research lead you through the war in the Pacific step by step. The war in the Pacific was especially bloody and costly simply because we were fighting an enemy that preferred death to defeat. The Geneva Conventions Accord meant nothing to the Japanese. You will feel just about every emotion available to you. My feelings were anger, disgust and shock. War is a terrible thing but the war in the Pacific was brutal and inhumane. You will not have a dull moment in this great book, from cover to cover. This should be required reading for all High School students.

I really enjoy these kinds of books that involve the military, mixed with Christianity and even some romance. A great book and a great series. I will be reading this again.
