This was an interesting and very readable book, but it's much more a discussion of Jewish late medieval and Enlightenment experiences in Iberia and the Dutch Republic and how those influenced Spinoza's philosophy than a biography of Spinoza. All of those would be welcome in a good biography, but Spinoza almost seems a bit character rather than the author's focus.

Enjoy this book for what it is, but those readers looking for a general biography of Spinoza should look elsewhere.

It's an interesting read, but Nuland cites absolutely no sources, a problem when you have a subject with as much scholarship - much of it conflicted - as there is on Maimonides. One spot where this actually leads to him to make a pretty egregious error is when he cites the Maimonidean 13 'principles of faith.' Nuland correctly states that Maimonides writes these principles in his mishnaic commentary, but he then proceeds to give a word for word translation of a watered down version of these principles that appears in all Orthodox prayer books. This is highly problematic because the anonymously authored (not by Maimonides!) prayerbook version often inaccurately summarizes or even 'censors' Maimonides' statements in his commentary, and Nuland doesn't even bother noting that or even crediting the anonymous author as a ... A nice short study of Marc Chagall's personal life (wives, children, and homes) and of his essential cultural roots including religious inspirations and conflicts. Chagall was fated to live a long life amidst a century of enormous social turmoil and with direct emotional ties to countries in the middle of the storms --- the USSR, France, U.S. and Israel.

Professor Wilson is a fine writer with an eye for the arresting detail. His book is a very good overview of the complex life of a great artist.

(Readers will have to refer to the Internet or art books for the actual paintings referred to in this text---unless happily they have already in person viewed the work of Marc Chagall.)

were I more intelligent I would give this book 5 stars but alas I am not and found it somewhat tough going in the 2 days I spent reading it.
I have pondered this subject over the years and even reproached certain Jews for what I consider their anti semitic views'.How can a jew be anti semitic "is the usual ludicrous reply.

Mamet {as have I} have come to the same conclusion as to what drives these traitors {my words)and to be succint they are cowards. If they can convince the world they are indeed cosmopolitans they will escape the fate of their fellows.History prooves otherwise as Mamet points out but what do these people know of history?About the same as they know of their heritage.Nothing.

People like Noam Chomsky, anti semite extraordinaire have huge followings and fame as an intellecual. Is ... Read More

This biography of Gene Tunney is an excellent work that paints a portrait of an exceptionally interesting person, who happened to be a professional boxer for part of his life. Clearly, boxing was not his life, for his interests were many and varied and fascinating. The contrasts with Jack Dempsey, with whom Tunney's younger years were entwined, are drawn beautifully, even though both men were gentlemen at the core and appreciated each other into their later years. I read Dempsey's autobiography (an "as told to" book) when I was a boy and was fascinated by his story. I was no less drawn into Tunney's story and am very happy that I was able to read it and come to learn about this very remarkable man who sought to leave rather than to linger in the limelight.

I seldom reread a book; this book I have read twice and bought three copies to give away. I will read it again; the writing is so funny, so dazzling. The characters are so real, their stories so poignant. Jewish readers will especially love this book; we know these people though we have never met. I fell in love with Bummy Davis and when he died, I felt a loss. My gangster imagination loved reading about all the mob characters, though I am not a fan of violence or boxing for that matter. I read this book as my husband lay dying of cancer; it kept me uplifted during this difficult time. I loved that it was long and hated that it had to end. This is such a special book, and I haven't even mentioned the awesome research it must have taken to write it.

When earlier in the year on NPR I heard about Michael Chabon's The Yiddish Policemen's Union, I immediately knew I wanted to read it, yet within twenty pages I began to suspect I'd made a mistake in buying what was far more a film noir sort of tale than the sociological one I'd been hoping for. So, yes, I was disappointed in this book. It starts off with a scenario sure to whet curiosity, this Jewish colony existing and thriving in Alaska, but whereas I wanted the novel to be an exploration of this intriguing concept, it was a crime story instead. I admit it wasn't a bad detective novel and I did stick around to see how it came out, but I'm not a big fan of that genre as much as I am one of alternate history, and I wanted to see more concentration on this hypothetical Yiddish culture atop the Pacific than Chabon gave it. I guess my giving this book three stars ... Read More
