Horwitz is an incredible writer, researcher, realist, and humanitarian. I have not been able to put this book down. Often, it is absolutely HILARIOUS, but at the same time, well, a horror story. I have lived all over the US, but my family hails from the South and that is where my heart has a home (not to mention my heritage is FULL of Confederate veterans). Horwitz hits the nail on the head with the Southern attitude of the War not really being over. What makes this book so special is you get a view of ALL sides. I loved it! Cheers, Tony Horwitz!

In this interesting history book, author Kenneth C. Davis tells six "untold" stories from American history. The six stories are: 1) Isabella's Pigs, which discusses Reconquista-era Spain, and the birth of Spanish America; 2) Hannah's Escape, which discusses early colonial America and the relations between the colonists and the Native Americans; 3) Washington's Confession, covering George Washington's early and not-so-glorious military career; 4) Warren's Toga, which discusses the beginning of the American Revolution; 5) Arnold's Boot, the story of that all-American villain, Benedict Arnold; and 6) Lafayette's Sword, which moves past the Revolution to discuss Shay's Rebellion.

Hmm. Even in trying to write the above description, I had to leave out a lot. In fact, this book is rather rambling, ... Read More

In my research for Wai-nani, High Chiefess of Hawaii, I read a dozen accounts of Captain James Cook's deadly encounter with the natives of Hawaii in 1779. This included not only the Captains' journal, but that of seaman, John Ledyard, and that of first mate, Lt. King. When Tony Horwitz declared that in Blue Latitudes he would take us boldly where Captain Cook had gone before, I didn't expect to learn anything new. What I found was the most informative, well-researched, fun account of the famous explorer to date. Horwitz likens Cook's three voyages of discovery throughout Polynesia and the Northwest to that of the Startrek's explorations into deep space. His journalistic style and breezy sense of humor keep historical events fresh. I stuck closely to Horwitz account ... Read More

I bought this book hoping to find out something about China, especially Chinese history. But the book contained very little about China; instead, I found the biography of an egomaniac whose scholarly work belies his inability to have any common sense in his daily life.

We hear of his journeys through China to seek for their historical knowledge, but we never see China itself.

We are told of all the times his car broke down, but except for Needham's annoyance, we don't learn anything else. (Was the terrain flat? Hilly? did it rain? Did they use sleeping bags or cots? Stay with foreigners or local hotels? How do car parts get transported into western China?)

He might as well have been traveling in Timbuktu for all the information about China in this part of the narrative. ... Read More

RAJESH C. OZA, ANUPAMA R. OZA, and SIDDHARTHA R. OZA

"Growth takes place whenever a challenge evokes a successful response that, in turn, evokes a further and different challenge. We have not found any intrinsic reason why this process should not repeat itself indefinitely, even though a majority of civilizations have failed, as a matter of historical fact."--Arnold J. Toynbee, A Study of History

This piece--co-authored by a middle-aged father, his recently-graduated-from-college daughter, and his college-going son--is a collective engagement with Fareed Zakaria's The Post-American World. The father is anxious about how effectively Americans are utilizing the advantage of world-class universities; the daughter is seeking to address the inequity of unequal access to higher education; and ... Bill Bryson's concise biography of Shakespeare is brilliantly written, humorously insightful, and entirely delightful. The prose is a well-crafted and playful presentation of the dozen odd facts known about Shakespeare and many of the suppositions, inferences, and wild speculations about the man and his work. This Shakespeare primer can be easily understood by any high-school level reader and no prior knowledge about Shakespeare is required--Bryson even helpfully informs the reader that "William Shakespeare of Stratford was unquestionably" (p. 196) the author of Shakespeare's plays and poetry, a fact that is apparently not self-evident.

Bryson has written several books including the prize-winning A Short History of Nearly Everything. The book under review is provided as a volume in the "Eminent Lives" series of ... Read More

I am disappointed once again with a hyped-up book. I thought it would be a beautiful story about a mute boy and his beloved dogs, but it wasn't! The first part was all I'd hoped I'd be reading until the whole thing turned south. Instead of being a beautiful story, it rather quickly turned dark and ugly, and became a haunting tragedy. I don't like misery and disheartening sadness, and want to know ahead of time if that's what a book is. This one was represented to be something wonderful, and it was anything but that, apart from the wonderful way he gave the dogs personality. If he'd stayed with that, he would have written a spectacular novel. When people say they hated for it to end, what on earth were they enjoying? The author could have written such a marvelous story, as he started to in the beginning, but he certainly changed his mind ... Read More

BAGHDAD WITHOUT A MAP is a series of articles Tony Horwitz wrote while trying to spark a freelance journalism career in the Middle East. The title is somewhat misleading as the articles cover a wide spectrum of Middle Eastern countries.

Horwitz does not always have an assignment as was the case when he visited Yemen, one of the most unusual countries in the book. Almost everyone in Yemen is high on Qat, a hallucinogenic shrub that the inhabitants chew like tobacco. Horwitz, who's always game for anything, samples the shrub, losing the feeling in his arms and legs when he does.

One of the most enlightening episodes was when Horwitz got an assignment to cover the tanker war on the "Strait of Hoummos." Horwitz hitches a ride on a sixty-foot Bombay boat. On board, Horwitz met the ship's engineer, a man named Jesudasyn ... Read More

Laugh at yourself and the whole world laughs with you. It's hard to write humorous essays that stand the test of time. Will Rogers realized that and just read the newspaper to audiences while adding an occasionally wry quip to get huge laughs. Put those messages into a book, and they wouldn't have lasted.

I haven't heard David Sedaris perform in person (which he does as readings), but I'm told he's marvelous. If you have had that pleasure, you will undoubtedly hear his voice, know his timing, and see his expressions as you read this witty, self-deprecating book. I suspect that such an imagined performance would easily turn this into a five-star book.

Proust waxed poetic about his memories of a madeleine (a shell-shaped cake in the France of his youth) in stream of consciousness prose. Sedaris does the same thing for a painful ... Read More
