Celebration of Discipline is a primer on the subject of spiritual disciplines which Foster describes generally as those practices that are historically central to Christianity.

Foster seems to understand that intimacy with God is the main objective when considering the spiritual disciplines. He accurately states that "we have only one thing to do, namely, to experience a life of relationship and intimacy with God." Foster also recognizes that human willpower is insufficient to secure spiritual success. With these admissions, I was looking forward to an analysis of how the practice of spiritual disciplines relates to human effort and fulfilling the Greatest Commandment. But Foster does not attempt to provide a theology of spiritual disciplines or any biblical exegesis. I think ... Read More

I read this book after it was recommended to me while discussing with a friend what I considered a "call to ministry". Cullinan seems to have lots of experience in dealing with and discerning these calls. The book is helpful and insightful for those who think they feel a call of some sort, but are not sure if it is legit, or for those who know it is legit, but don't know what to do about it.

I absolutely loved this book. The way the book ended was unexpected, because of the way the story drew you in. Until you read the book that might not make sence. But I highly recomend you read it to see for yourselves. The book really draws out your emotions, I felt joy to the point of laughing out loud and sadness to the point of tears. The tragedy was a hard one to swallow. Because of the emotions something like this invokes you really get the idea as to how God our Father really loves us.

I came upon this book by chance. I have read past books by Mr Johnson and have found all of his writing to go beyond the superficial spiritual issues. Ben Johnson discusses how truely difficult change can be and why. Within the pages of "Living Before God" I found inspiration and understanding of the human heart. I could not put the book down, even for a moment, in my want to see further into how I can grow closer to God. Life can present many challenges to close your heart and mind to God, through the author I found ways to relax and allow myself to hear God again. I recommend this book to everyone traveling their own spritual journeys.

Before I read this book, I thought deacons were strictly or at least primarily ministers to the poor and needy. I thought that those who are called to the liturgical and pastoral ministries needed to belong to the priesthood. Mr. Collins' explanation of the meanings of Greek words in the original scriptures changed my understanding of the roles of deacons. Although he complained too much that some other scholars haven't taken note of his findings, he does make a very strong case that deacons shouldn't think of their role as only ministers to the needy. He provides specific examples of deacons who preached the Word, who participated in the liturgy, who travelled between churches as representatives, and who attended to the administrative needs of the bishops. He concludes that these are historically ... Read More

8.Whose Bible Is It? : A Short History of the Scriptures by: Jaroslav Pelikan

: Whose Bible Is It? : A Short History of the Scriptures
Following the example of Aristotle, who in his Poetics summarizes the Odyssey in three sentences (`This is essential; the rest is episode'), one might offer a brief summary of the Bible thus: "God creates the earth and makes a covenant with his people. They enter the promised land and build the temple, then survive its destruction and their dispersal. God sends his Son, who dies on the cross and is resurrected. Various letters follow."

But of course, this would not do justice to the greatest book written by mankind under divine inspiration. Jaroslav Pelikan's Whose Bible Is It? pays its proper due to the Holy Book and to the scholarship that it has inspired, not by providing a summary of its content (although some paragraphs come close to paraphrasing the plot line) but by presenting a brief ... Justo L. Gonzalez has written four volumes on the History of Christian Thought; he has written two volumes on the Story of Christianity. The latter being book on events, political structure, and social structure. Not devoid of Christian theology but not the main thrust of the work. Volume One The Story of Christianity deals with the events that developed Christian Orthodoxy and later Roman Catholic Orthodoxy which was the cause of the Reformation.

The book is divided into four parts and thirty-six chapters. The first part (109 pages) deals with Christianity and the state of Rome: The growth of Christianity through Paul's missionary journeys, state persecution of Christians, further sharing of the faith those fleeing persecution, and the example of those being martyred for their beliefs. The next 111 pages ... Read More

This is a wonderful, thought provoking, action evoking devotional. Because of its indepth nature, I use it as a weekly devotional, reading and rereading the selection throughout the week and working on one of the action items. Devotional Classics is an excellent choice for intentional discipleship.
