First of all, about the style and tone of this book. It was repetitive and not well written. The authors' illustrative stories were not all that interesting or relevant, and after the first third of the book or so I found myself skimming. This thick book is like a padded but superficial summary of the bulk of the self-help book market already out there, but provides no new information. Instead, the same basic concepts are repeated ad infinitum. Exercise. Don't eat junk. Have good relationships. Take care of yourself. And not exactly motivating to me as a woman. Lines like, "And it is at least possible that you are a big fat piggy..." come across as glib and demeaning. The book is as much a collection of articles as it is a book, and there were a couple of inconsistencies that would have been caught by one more editorial pass. That said...the book very much informed/improved my running training, and for that reason alone, it's worth the purchase price.

Finally, a book worth reading. Neal Boortz says exactly what needs to be said, and in a very forthright and simple way. This should be required reading for all citizens of voting age. Looking forward to the next one by Neal.

This is such a good book. When I first got it I read much of it to my young children and they loved hearing about the Okinawan life and elders. My 10 year old son wanted us to move there! I have bought more copies of this book than any other because I keep giving mine away. Now I just keep a stash to give. This should become your textbook for living.

I bought this about 6 months ago and it died. It all started about 2 days after i bought it. Whenever i would hit the big button to turn on the light on the watch it would make the numbers impossible to see. I thought it was a normal reaction to dying batteries, so i replaced them (I had just received the watch). That seemed to fix the problem for about 1 week. then it started to get worse and worse. I replaced the battery 2 more times (making this bargain watch less bargain). Then yesterday it died completely when i tried to turn on the light on the watch. I will go with a polar next time. it may be more expensive, but my friends who have them are still using them while i am burying mine in the back yard in a solemn ceremony tonight. 'Ave Maria'

This is a fantastic book and a great reference to help you get through some of the challenging times as we age (most of the challenges are in our head). The Next Fifty Years gives you some grounding, puts your life into perspective. I love it.

The fact that many of the suggestions may be intuitive, as one critic alleges, is irrelevent. Many people act contrary to their intuition out of laziness, depression or whatever. Positive reinforcemnt of classic truths could be of great help to such people and should not be trivialized or dismissed. Such advice is plentiful in this invaluable book and not all of it is intuitive. One such is the statement that, even if you are in your nineties, it is not too late to begin weight training. Fortunately for me, I read this book soon after publication and am eternally thankful that, at the age of 76, I go to a gym several times weekly and run regularly. While x-rays show me to be racked with osteoarthritis I am asymptomatic. I consider "Successful Aging" a must read.
