I may be young but let me tell you that this book was probably the best book I have ever read in my life. It is written SO well and I love the little pieces of information that show what leads up to Peter doing what he did. I cried and cried SO much when I read because this book is so emotional and so much to take in. It is outstanding and I would be more than happy to read this book again.

I really liked the formatting of this novel. Ms. Picoult flipped back and forth between the past and the present, telling the stories of Emily Gold, Christopher Harte and their respective families in the years leading up to and the months directly following a failed dual suicide attempt between the two kids. Since Chris was the survivor, speculations rose about whether or not Emily actually killed herself. Evidence was gathered that suggested foul play and Chris was put on trial for her murder.

The concept of this story was excellent. And the literary styling of changing times, then seamlessly overlapping past and present towards the end of the novel, when the reader is learning what really happened that night, is brilliant.

Sadly, what is not so brilliant is ... Read More

I've been a big fan of many of Jodi Picoult's books, especially "Change of Heart" and "My Sister's Keeper," but this book was a huge disappointment. The storyline, like the main character, can't seem to figure out where it wants to go. My biggest problem with the book, however, is the main male character. Nicholas is such a complete jerk, arrogant, angry, selfish and self-absorbed . . . I was honestly hoping that he'd be hit by a truck so that Paige and her son could put their lives together and move on. I would not have been surprised if he had turned out to be a physically abusive husband--he has all of the psychological characteristics of an abuser. I could not believe that he could change, and so I did not want the lovers to reunite. I wanted Paige to take her son and run away and ... Read More

After reading my first novel by Picoult, My Sister's Keeper, which simply was a brilliant book, I was keen on reading Plain Truth, which turned out to be a little disappointing. The idea of writing about an Amish girl who secretly gives birth to a baby and is accused of murder because the baby is found dead the next morning is undoubtedly great and worth to be explored. However, the way Picoult develops the story and portrays the characters is not as good it could have been.
The main point is that I do not know much more about Amish culture. I heard several things about Amish people and saw them when I was living in Pennsylvania for a while, but after reading Picoult's novel, I cannot say that I know much more about them.
The second aspect is that the relationship between the Amish girl, ... Read More

I love Jodi Picoult's writing and the moral dilemmas she incorporates into her books. Tenth Circle, however, was too over-the-top.

Jason, the 17-year-old purported rapist was for me the most sympathetic character. He is a high school athlete with scholarship potential who hooks up with Trixie, a young 14-year-old girl. After Jason breaks up with Trixie, she says she will do whatever it takes for them to stay together. They separately attend the same party where Trixie gets intoxicated, plays Strip Poker and observes her peers playing foolish sex games. Later the same evening, a weeping and disheaveled Trixie goes home and tells her father she was raped.

Jason is first accused of the rape and then later the more serious crime of putting a date-rape drug in Trixie's drink. The actual ... Read More

Jodi Picoult must love a challenge. This is an unusual book that deals with the issue of divine religious visitations, stigmata and miracles through the experience of a young girl after her parents divorce. Picoult understands the complicated relationship between parents and their children as deftly illustrated through Mariah White after her marriage disintegrates, and she is caught up in a media circus with her daughter. Picoult tackles a hot button topic with journalistic integrity; but still manages to weave a credible and believable fictional narrative. I look forward to reading her next thought provoking offering.

 : Vanishing Acts: A Novel
Jodi Picoult has characters with lots of depth. Vanishing Acts is a fascinating story of a father and his daughter living a quiet, simple life in a small town in New Hampshire until one day there is a knock at their door...

I enjoyed the style Picoult's writing, hearing from each of the main characters in their own voice. The relationship of Delia, Eric and Fitz, childhood playmates and life long friends, was another fascinating dimension of the book.

Picoult writes of life inside a prison in a sadly believable way. And her trial scenes too are well done.

My one gripe is the relationship of Delia and her daughter Sophie with the next door neighbor in Arizona. It seems a little too familiar too fast and for that it is just not believable or interesting to read. It is too contrived and it ... Read More

My daughter is a Jodi Picoult fan who felt sad because she believed she had read all of this Author's books. To cheer up my daughter, I embarked upon a search in the hope of finding a book by the Author that my daughter may have overlooked. Not knowing the names of the Picoult titles my daughter had read, I did an Amazon search of all Picoult's books, copied the list (with reviews) and emailed it to my daughter for her perusal. To my delight and my daughter's amazement, an unread title leapt from the email attachment - Salem Falls. This book will be slipped into my daughter's Christmas stocking and she, "can't wait" to read it! I remember being her age and feeling the same disappointment when exhausting a favourite author's offerings. So on behalf of my daughter and myself, "Thank you Amazon"! I know she will relish every word. ... Read More

some of the things I liked were also some of the things that bothered me. Edwards is a descriptive writer; if you like that kind of writing, you will like her style. However, you still may not like the book. I like her writing, but it works better in short stories or shorter novels.

I liked how Nora began to grow career-wise throughout the novel, but thought her character could have been fleshed out more. I did not find her a sympathetic character, particular as the novel wore on, and I think it would have been better if she had been.

Also, I thought the plot unfolded a little too neatly in some aspects. To be sure, the characters had difficult lives, but sometimes things did not ring true. For example, Caroline didn't struggle as I thought she would have: Doro, her gift, just not very realistic. Also Davis's photography ... Read More
