Truman Capote did an excellent job getting the reader involved with the characters in this short story. I did't want it to end.

... mainly because it is such a good story and so well written. Come to think of it, not much of this book is really about the rape and crime. It is about childhood, growing up and growing prejudice. It is about not only racism but also feminism. Scout, the main character, has such a lovely personality and I really started to like her. It was almost like I knew her and parts of me fell in love with Jem, her brother. I found parts of the slang a bit hard to read and it took a good 100 pages before the story had me that intrigued that I couldn't put it down. Sometimes you read a book and you really do realize why some books last with us and literature forever and why some don't. This book deals with human joy and suffering, ideals and rebels, crime and punishment and of course of race and sad part of the history ... Read More

In The Things They Carried, Vietnam veteran Tim O'Brien called upon his own wartime experiences, labeled them as fiction, and wrote one of the most emotionally potent books I've ever read.

It's irrelevant to me how much of O'Brien's book "really happened" because O'Brien's words and stories in The Things They Carried deeply touched me. O'Brien wrote simply, but effectively. He tapped into real emotion and conveyed those emotions skillfully. With each and every short that made up a larger story with The Things They Carried, I could picture myself clear as day in those very same situations.

That's one benefit of calling this book fiction. Had O'Brien designated it nonfiction, I think each tale would have filtered through my knowledge this happened to O'Brien and registered as a "past ... Read More

This book has over 1000 reviews. There is, essentially, nothing that I can say that has not already been said.

The novel is nice, well-written, and an enjoyable read. The characters are all plausible, believable, and entertaining. They are all three-dimensional, and none of them are useless. The book is extremely well-written, and I would recommend it to just about anyone. I wouldn't call it flawless, though.

Perhaps because of the hype, perhaps because it lacks some sort of jenais se quas, I can't quite bring myself to give this book five stars.

First off, I don't understand why there's so much hate around this novel. I'd say it's one of the best pieces of American literature I have ever read. The reader's brief journey through Holden's transition from the innocent over to the "perverted" adult world. From Holden's encounter with the water-spitting perverts to Holden's date with Sally in New York, the Catcher in the Rye is a great example of what the teenage years are like. This excellent novel is one that I truly related to, being a teenager experiencing some of the same feelings that Holden feels. While I don't know what it feels like to lose a loved one like Holden does, I understand how he feels about sexuality and that struggle to maintain what is innocent in the world, and I even could experience some of what it would feel like to lose a loved one through Holden's ... Maybe I just have issues with the genre. Short stories can be unsatifying when they are left open ended. I am sure this is meant to leave us with a "what happened next?" feeling and that's supposed to be intriguing, but I just find it frustrating. But there is no denying that Capote's writing is vivid, beautiful and engrossing. He creates poetry from the mundane and perfectly captures the pathos and subtleties of the human condition.

 : Capote: A Biography
This has to be the second worst book that I've read in along time. His flings and the details that the writer goes into aren't always that interesting. The writer does name names and some are a shock and make you think. However, saying that the book could of been pared down at least 75 pages by omitting some details of his love life I didn't care to know.

Robert Blake is magnificent (there's a word I rarely use) as Perry Smith in this classic rendition of IN COLD BLOOD. While his murderous acts, along w/ partner Dick Hickock (Scott Wilson), are as reprehensible as they are senseless, I found myself captivated by Perry and his fate. Blake brings a child-like quality to this killer that makes him more difficult to hate, and impossible to dismiss. Now, I felt for the victims even more in that they were totally innocent prey. This poor family was annihilated for no reason other than greed and blind rage. Still, Perry Smith is one of those monsters made in the crucible of life-long pain and pointless existence. Did he deserve to pay the highest price for his crimes? Certainly. Is his past an excuse for his actions? Not at all. However, I did find Blake's portrayal to be surprisingly moving. Smith's ... 9.Their Eyes Were Watching God by: Zora Neale Hurston

: Their Eyes Were Watching God
The only speedbump in this maddeningly addictive read is Hurston's rendering of dialect, spelled just as it's pronounced. Once you acclimate, and once you know that her writing was based on her astounding academic work as a folklorist and anthropologist, it only takes a few pages before you realize that you're in the hands of a master. The hundreds of people who have taken the time to review this book testify to its impact--once you're done with it, it evokes a compulsion to share the experience.

The brilliance of the book is only enhanced by its brevity. You can easily read it in a sitting, although you'll find yourself lingering on some of the pages as you turn over the expressiveness and beautiful language phrase by phrase. So many reviewers have summed up the story's plot, I'll leave that description to a single line: beautiful love ... Read More

Other Voices Other Rooms is at times massively confusing, intensely beautiful, and mystical. Often, all at the same time. Capote's command and use of language and style is unquestionably brilliant, and many times the text reads like poetry. Capote is simply a masterful composer of language. Every word in its rightful place.
Capote also has the gift that many writers lack and that is a descriptive prowess that completely surrounds the reader and engulfs them in the world of the text. The first time that Idabel describes the history of the Cloud Hotel to Joel the reader finds themselves seeing this world materialize in front of their eyes. To be so completely lost in a work speaks highly of the writer's abilities!
Another great strength of this text is how accurately it displays how a child left to his own devices has to create and interpret the ... Read More
