The crossing is Cormac's first book. As such, it is noteworthy for its narrative. It is a dark moody walk through a landscape of people you hope to never meet. Cormac has a style that sets him apart , as all his future novels show; notable, Blood meridian, The border trilogy and others. AS a writer of unusual people he can not be topped ! Check him out..

I read this final volume of the "Border Trilogy" because I had read the first two. I was massively disappointed with the plot. It is far more pessimistic and dark than the first two volumes, and can leave the reader depressed. Yes, indeed, the language is as outstanding as ever, and one can hear the authentic speech of people in the particular place and time, but personally, I found that to be another reason to find the plot depressing: the more you feel for the characters, the more you want them to come out of the story at least somewhat intact.

All I can say without giving away too much is that those of us who feel compelled to finish this set of books need to get ready for a serious downer.

I like the book about as much as the movie, and the book features more scenes and dialogue. I also like how the book ties up the confusing aspects of the movie. The ending of both is still a little odd, however (somebody I know said that Sherriff Bell has Alzheimer's and that his dreams are based on actual memories of his, and I think the last part is true, but the book doesn't indicate that he has Alzheimer's).
The book is fast-paced and intriguing. The way it was written is sometimes distracting, though. The poor grammar and punctuation sometimes takes the reader out of the story. Further, when two characters are conversing, it can be hard to follow who is saying what. At the same time, the book is more of a fast read because of what McCarthy has done. Still, he could have at least made the characters ... Read More

Published in 2006, Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD has been among the most widely praised novels of the era, receiving numerous awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. It has also been extremely popular with the reading public--something of a surprise, for it would be difficult to imagine a novel that is more relentlessly bleak than this one.

THE ROAD presents us with a nameless father and son, the latter about ten years old, who have survived an unspecified environmental disaster and who are now traveling south in an effort to escape the ever-intensifying cold that seems to grip the landscape. The journey is horrendous: they push a grocery cart through a seemingly endless sea of gray ash beneath a gray sky, cold, wet, hungry, and very fearful of other people--and with good reason, for in the absence ... I picked up this book by chance, was shocked almost from page 1, but could hardly bear to put it down for a moment. When it was over I felt limp, bruised and my eyeballs were throbbing.

The grandiose Biblical style with its Semitic constructions (dissimilar items linked with "and" and "and") looks all set up to fall flat on its face, and yet is miraculously sustained without a seam: terse and eloquent, dark and shining.

McCarthy's vision of the Old West as a vast moral Void where all traces of inherited meaning are lost and the compass spins insanely in all directions, where the most atrocious violence happens with a curious soundlessness as if in a vacuum, is horribly compelling and changes forever the way you think about American history. It's as though designed to illustrate William Carlos Williams' ... Read More

I wish I had the ability to describe just how stunningly good this book is. The prose approaches perfection. I rarely ascribe true and unrelenting genius to writers, but I will make an exception for Mr. McCarthy. My favorite opening sentence of all time...

"Dear friend now in the dusty clockless hours of the town when the streets lie black and steaming in the wake of the watertrucks and now when the drunk and the homeless have washed up in the lee of walls in alleys or abandoned lots and cats go forth highshouldered and lean in the grim perimeters about, now in these soothblacked brick or cobbled corridors where lightwire shadows make a gothic harp of cellar doors no soul shall walk save you."

A waste of beautiful prose and dialog. Disturbing for the sake of disturbing. Lacking any of the emotion that has made the disturbance in McCarthy's other novels lead to insight and in many cases, redemption.

Cormac McCarthy is best known for his later novels Blood Meridian, The Border Trilogy: All the Pretty Horses, the Crossing, Cities of the Plain, and No Country for Old Men. Set in a remote Tennessee community, his first novel, The Orchard Keeper (1965), first caught the attention of Albert Erskine (William Faulkner's editor) at Random House with its obvious Faulkner influences. The Orchard Keeper reads like a Faulkner novel, and will appeal to anyone who enjoys Faulkner. It tells the simple story of John Wesley Rattner, a teenage boy, and Marion Sylder, the outlaw who killed Rattner's father, Kenneth Rattner. Both characters are oblivious to this connection. The novel follows the evolving dynamics between these two characters, and not only reveals the early genius of Cormac McCarthy, but promises his much greater work still to come.

I had to read this book and another of his for my english class. All of them were terrible. It was a waste of my time and money (about $22.00!!). It is too descriptive, too country, and too tedious. There is no plot, and I could not relate to its characters in any way whatsoever.

Stay away from Cormac McCarthy books, AT ALL COSTS!!

Don't be fooled, there is no action in this book. It is simply a conversation between two men, after a climatic event occured to bring them together. They speak of life, death, and the meaning behind it all. "The Sunset Limited" is pure McCarthy, and would probably be breathtaking performed by the proper players. It is a short read, but a powerful one. When you close the back cover you will be flushed with thoughts about your own mortality and convictions. I would not suggest this as an introductionn to Cormac McCarthy (The Road or Blood Merdian are the proper beginnings), but for the reader interested in diving into this authors rich catelogue, I highly suggest it!
