I am disappointed once again with a hyped-up book. I thought it would be a beautiful story about a mute boy and his beloved dogs, but it wasn't! The first part was all I'd hoped I'd be reading until the whole thing turned south. Instead of being a beautiful story, it rather quickly turned dark and ugly, and became a haunting tragedy. I don't like misery and disheartening sadness, and want to know ahead of time if that's what a book is. This one was represented to be something wonderful, and it was anything but that, apart from the wonderful way he gave the dogs personality. If he'd stayed with that, he would have written a spectacular novel. When people say they hated for it to end, what on earth were they enjoying? The author could have written such a marvelous story, as he started to in the ... Read More

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a charming trip into post WWII England and the Channel Islands. Much as you would hang by your mailbox waiting for a letter from a friend, you are caught up in the correspondence mode of writing, as the story is told through letters. Similar to the BBC film Island at War, PPPie is about the German occupation of the Channel Islands. The characters are heartwarming, and memorable. I have given several books to friends who are also in reading discussion groups...which border on "ladies who read and eat". It went down like tuna noodle casserole and a cup of tea.

I loved this book. I wasn't surprised, as I am a huge Jane Green fan, and this book did not disappoint. The book was so richly detailed that you feel like you're right there on Nantucket! Bottom line, if you're looking for a deep, philosophical read, this ain't it, but if you want something fun and engrossing, pick up this book!

I couldn't even finish this book. I found it hard to stay engaged and REALLY found it hard to pretend that I even liked (or understood) the game of cricket. I am glad that this was a library book instead of a purchase.

It was definitely entertaining (I might have used "gripping" if it were a novel) enough to from cover to cover without a break. Even though it was about immigrant families from West Bengal (which I have never visited) living mostly on the East Coast of America (in cities and towns I have never heard of), she created a sense of association, call it connection, with the characters.

The little girl torn between two different cultures at home and at school, the teenager struggling in college and thereafter to prove herself, the accomplished professional resigning to an arranged marriage "to fix it", the expectant mom of a toddler, the parents wanting their kids to have the best of both worlds... they all hit home for this particular audience. Not sure if it would be the same outside the diaspora. ... Read More

Although I told myself I wouldn't, I finally did break down and pay hardcover price for Alan Furst's latest. I just can't stay away from Furst novels, nor can I imagine why I'd want to.

There's still lots of atmosphere and a more recognizable plot than some of his novels have. This takes place in Warsaw and France, and the protagonist is French. Writing France of this period is Furst's strongest suit and this plot, although based primarily in Poland, lets him use plenty of French detail. In Warsaw, Colonel Mercier, the new French military attache, finds himself in a crossroads of prewar intrigue, as the French, Germans, Poles, and Russians jockey for position, spying on one another and trying to discern, most of all, Germany's intentions.

Mercier, a limping World War One veteran still dashing ... Read More

Thought this book was about 100 pages to long, which made it a boring read. If you're interested in Laura Bush I would suggest reading one of the many biographies written about her.

A good page-turner. This one will appeal to those who love WW II military stories and anyone who loves an odyssey through a dystopian landscape. Lev, a Jewish boy too young for the Soviet army, is arrested for looting the body of German bomber pilot that lands near his apartment. But instead of the usual punishment of a bullet in the head, he is sent on an impossible quest with Koyla, an army deserter Don Juan who fancies himself a conman. Their goal: locate a dozen eggs for a wedding cake to be made for a Russian colonel's daughter in a city under siege and without food. This story will grab ahold of you and keep you reading page after page.

This is not Lehane's best work. The book deals with some fascinating issues, but by narrowing the scope of these issues down to how they affect a single (and more importantly, atypical) family he takes away much of the power these issues hold. Still, it makes for a decent read.

The main problem with the book is that it is not historically accurate. The storyline involving Babe Ruth has serious flaws. Ruth is constantly referred to as large and overwieght. Mention is made of how he moves his large frame with tiny little steps. However when Ruth played for Boston, he was a young man. Quite athletic and somewhat lanky, as even the pictures in this book show. He was not the big, round player he would become during his time with the Yankees.

During the same Ruth storyline, Lehane describes Ruth hitting ... Read More

Took awhile to understand the numerous characters in the family but once I got passed the first 25+ pages and flipping back and forth to the family tree, I was totally intrigued. Very good story and couldn't wait to pick up the book to read more. Good writer and storyteller. Highly recommend.
