This is one of the most Pulizer-worthy novels I've read in a long while. The novel tells the previously untold story of the absent father in Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (Signet Classics). In Little Women, the reader only gets to know Peter March through his letters sent home to his family from the Civil War. Of course, in the interest of sparing his family the details of war, his letters are more cheerful than his reality. Geraldine Brooks uses the novel March to tell of Mr. March's early life as a traveling salesman, of his first kiss with someone other than his future wife, of the meeting of his wife, of his connections to Emerson and Thoreau, of his strong abolitionist sentiments, of the war that changed him both physically and mentally, and of misunderstandings and wrongs that were ... The Zookeeper's Wife by Ackerman
This is a true story based on the husband and wife caretakers of the Warsaw Zoo during WWII. It tells a great deal about the animals in the zoo and the caretakers; there is also the story of the Underground movement and the help given to remove Jews from the Warsaw ghetto by the zoo caretakers. These escapees became the guests at the main house at the zoo and were often placed in the animal houses, to hide them from the German soldiers.

I have enjoyed the book but felt it was somewhat of a slow read. Thoughful and reflective.

Interesting story, but this is not worth the time to read, as the characters are poorly defined and the writing is pretty amateurish. I'd read "The Good Mother" years ago and loved it, but this book is a turnoff to reading anything else by her. It's hard to empathize with any of the characters, who all seem one-dimensional and amoral. She writes as though she is making epiphanies about women, marriage, etc. but they did not resonate with me.

It was definitely entertaining (I might have used "gripping" if it were a novel) enough to from cover to cover without a break. Even though it was about immigrant families from West Bengal (which I have never visited) living mostly on the East Coast of America (in cities and towns I have never heard of), she created a sense of association, call it connection, with the characters.

The little girl torn between two different cultures at home and at school, the teenager struggling in college and thereafter to prove herself, the accomplished professional resigning to an arranged marriage "to fix it", the expectant mom of a toddler, the parents wanting their kids to have the best of both worlds... they all hit home for this particular audience. Not sure if it would be the same outside the diaspora.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is a charming trip into post WWII England and the Channel Islands. Much as you would hang by your mailbox waiting for a letter from a friend, you are caught up in the correspondence mode of writing, as the story is told through letters. Similar to the BBC film Island at War, PPPie is about the German occupation of the Channel Islands. The characters are heartwarming, and memorable. I have given several books to friends who are also in reading discussion groups...which border on "ladies who read and eat". It went down like tuna noodle casserole and a cup of tea.

Allan Corduner is a masterful storyteller in his narration of Markus Zusak's The Book Thief.

Our family (children seventeen down to ten years old) listened with complete attention through eleven CDs! The story is sometimes very sad and somewhat graphic, it is after all World War II in Nazi Germany.

It is a sad beginning as Leisel and her brother are sent to live with a foster family and Leisel's brother dies on the way. Leisel's relationship with her foster parents is beautiful. Her relationship with Max is poignant. And her relationship with Rudy is touching.

Leisel is the book thief and it is a must read. I do however, HIGHLY reccommend Allan Corduner's narration.

This is wonderful read, both from the perspective of the insights into the way of life at the time in question, and from the perspective of the development of the personalities and motivations of the charachters. I am a fan of non-fictional histories, so this was a bit off the track for me, but it was a wonderful diversion. Having recently read The Great Mortality by John Kelly, I found the intimate details of life in these times even more fascinating.

I am disappointed once again with a hyped-up book. I thought it would be a beautiful story about a mute boy and his beloved dogs, but it wasn't! The first part was all I'd hoped I'd be reading until the whole thing turned south. Instead of being a beautiful story, it rather quickly turned dark and ugly, and became a haunting tragedy. I don't like misery and disheartening sadness, and want to know ahead of time if that's what a book is. This one was represented to be something wonderful, and it was anything but that, apart from the wonderful way he gave the dogs personality. If he'd stayed with that, he would have written a spectacular novel. When people say they hated for it to end, what on earth were they enjoying? The author could have written such a marvelous story, as he started to in the beginning, but he certainly changed his mind ... Read More

This book was lousy, just another in the long line of flops for Grisham. I miss the old style of great story telling, this was to slow, never really got my attention, I read a lot of other books, kept coming back to this one to finish, finally my wife said, just put it away. I did, save your money on this one. I'm still holding out for a great story to come along.
