St. Teresa of Avila is a great writer of the spiritual life, especially regardingg prayer and striving for mystical union. I liked that the book conatins a few of her writings in one book, especially when you want to cross-reference when you read and study her works.

I feel a little gruff in only giving this book three stars, but that is largely due to the fact that if someone were to ask me what the book was about, I would scratch my head and be able to say little more than, "Spiritual Formation" and hope that the other person knew what that was. Mulholland's book was well written enough, but I found that the book did not hold my attention very well, even amidst a quiet environment. I re-read page after pager trying to glean something that would stick with me after I set the book down. These "sticking points" were few and far between. An Invitaion to Presence is just that an opportunity to experience the process of the presence of God. It is a great introduction to the practice of meditation and contemplation. It has a leader guide that enables it to be used in a group setting but of course is good to study individually. The cross references and resources shared give opporunity to move additionally in the process as one grows and wants to open more and more to knowing the heart of God.

Margaret Gunther's book on Spiritual Direction is an excellent resource for all persons who are professionally involved in soul care, whether clergy, counselors, retreat directors, or spiritual directors. I've read many books on this subject, yet this one kept me engaged from cover to cover. I read it in one evening. If you are involved in spiritual ministry to people, get this book. That being said, I wish Gunther had added two more chapters. I am sure she is qualified and I would like to hear her views on a couple of related subjects. I wish she had set aside a chapter dedicated to future goals in spiritual direction. The translators of this book have a deep and proper insight of that which is mystical in the soul. As they refashion St. Johns words that maintain an honoring of his faith and purpose. It was their work experienced in another book that led me to this version. Kieran Kavanaugh is one of the best.
