As a veteran biker (road and mountain) & triathlete I both identified and enjoyed this book immensely. The book is funny throughout, and I learned things about road racing I had never experienced before. The authors did a great job of keeping equipment and other biking "holy wars" separate from the material, which is very refreshing. (for instance, Powertap is better than SRM, you must have this specific coach to ever be good, etc)

I can't tell you how many times I handed the book to my wife and said "see! it's not just me!" ......

Overall, if you are a biker, bike fan, casual bike acquaintance, or know/related to someone who is, read the book, you will learn something and laugh at the same time.

Floyd's story is compelling, taking you from his days of riding 400 mile weeks, day and or night, to his term in the professional ranks and being shunned by "team Lance" to go unto lead Phonak. He gives an insider's view into the handling of urine and blood samples that is quite suspect at best, making the reader truly question the objective results of these tests that can literally make and break careers. Because of his strong religious and moral upbringing, one truly begins to question whether Floyd had the mindset to use performance enhancing drugs since he seemed to pride himself on racing under his own steam. What is clear is that he leaves the verdict up to the reader, using compelling prose to communicate a heart rending story.

If you have seen or heard Bob Role you know how real a person he is. He hides nothing of himself or the Cyclist's life. The short chapters of vivid recollections of painful days spent in the saddle are wonderful.

"The day the big men cried" is worth the price of the book five times over.

If you love bike racing read this book!

If you want insight into day in day out real world professional cycling. It took real guts for a kid just out of high school to leave home, head off Belgium to become a professional cyclist. Joe Parkin did that and now has written I great book about his experiences. Not everyone can be a Lance Armstrong, Bernard Hinault or Greg LeMond but the thrill of striving to competitive at almost that level, while knowing you never will, is the real courage of professional riders like Joe. Joe started his pro career in the country of the greatest cyclist of the 20th Century Eddie Merckx riding Kermis races. The highlight of Joe's European pro career was helping his teammate Luc Roosen win the Tour de Suisse (Tour of Switzerland). His descriptions of riding in those Swiss mountain stages were agonizing read. ... Read More

With phenomenal photographs and a text that delves into interesting facets of the event, the coffee table book is a great tribute to the iron men who have fought through pain and the elements in a race of survival, with the select few etching their names with the elite company of champions.

Since 1896, "l'enfer du Nord," has conquered more riders than been vanquished by the swift and strong. Sections covering the famed cobblestones, weather and those who have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat - and vice versa - are fascinating.

The book is a must for fans of pro cycling or those who enjoy exploring impressive athletic achievements. It is an incredible journey.

: Lance Armstrong's War: One Man's Battle Against Fate, Fame, Love, Death, Scandal, and a Few Other Rivals on the Road to the Tour de France
This book pretty much rules. If you have an interest in professional cycling, you've probably already read it. If you don't have an interest in pro cycling... well, you should. No sport mixes cutting edge science, the limits of human endurance, complex tactics and horrific physical pain into a more engaging final product. I mean come on, I know all about hemocrit levels thanks to my interest in little dudes in tights.

This book is first about a report following Lance's attempt to gain a sixth Tour de France victory. You get a real sense of what a driven man he is. Lance is apparently not a very nice guy to work for. He holds grudges; he hates his enemies with an unhealthy passion. But he wins bike races, and he is a really compelling athlete to follow.

This book is, however, more than ... Read More
