First off, Mr. Paolini lied to us. Trillogies are supposed to be in three volumes. He has decided to go for more money by expanding the series to four books. Secondly Brisinger has gone off the deep end in detailed descriptions of everything from every blade of grass that moves to each spatter of blood in the battles. The author has endevored to remove all imagination from the reader. He has even included chapters with no appearent purpose, ("Glumra") for instance. This was 748 pages which should have been reduced to about 350. Hopefully "book 4" will actually complete the series.

Most of the time, when you see a number in the title of a book indicating that it is a sequel, you know it will be bad. This time is different. Hedge Knight II continues the story of Dunk the Hedge Knight and his squire Egg, in the same tradition as the first. Dunk is a good hearted man of honor who is treated with contempt due to his status. He holds firm to the values that he was taught, while he has every incentive not to. If you like the Dunk and Egg characters, this is a winner. If you don't, you won't like this one either.

Greate read! I have to say that the chapters about Wills haunted me for a few nights.

I enjoyed the Genesis of Shannara series and the The Word and the Void series as much or even more than the rest of the Shannara books.

I highly recommend all of them. I hope there are more to come.

Maybe the best story I've ever read. Epic in span. The books look intimidating in size, but they read fast. There are no good guys and bad guys, just characters with their own motivations. At the end of the first book, I had my favorite character and my most hated characters(two brothers); at the end of the third book the brothers were my favorite characters. The character development in this story is second to none. This series of books would appeal to non science-fiction fans. I can't recommend it enough. The only thing that scares me is that there are at least 2, probably 3, more books to come, and the author is gray-haired and over weight. I pray this series is completed.

Thank God for amazon's recomendations because they got me to try this new author and his first book was riveting... He brings to life a great world filled with mystery as well as believable characters... This book is a keeper. He has moved up onto my list of great authors such as Tolkien, David Gemmell, and L.E. Modeseitt Jr.

I've got two books of my own published and have worked like a dog to achieve that. And here comes George R. R. Martin with this gigantic book and larger series and breaks every rule--and charms me! Totally. I have to say--I'm mad at the literary establishment. The teachers and professors at writing conferences tell us don't do this: And then Martin does, and it works.

But who needs a 1200+ page novel? This cult favorite breaks every rule of the literary fiction/creative writing major/MFA crowd. It's got more characters than an ant hill has ants. A hundred story lines moving forward in a dizzying, incomprehensible maze. Names. Dates. Serial numbers. It's huge. Martin makes no attempt at creating a beginning, middle and end to this multi-volume epic--not to the whole thing or any volume. He just ends the ... Read More

I won't waste too much time on this - the preponderance of highly favorable reviews say it all. Yes, the series is incomplete, so you might consider that when thinking about getting started. Yes, there's quite a bit of potentially 'unpleasant' material in this and the other books, so think about that as well.

All that aside, though, this book is a great start to what is already clearly a classic fantasy series - fantastic characterization and immersion in a realistic and intriguing world will do that. Shocks and surprises abound - HIGHLY recommended.

As with my last review, I won't waste time going into too much depth in describing this book - suffice to say, I feel the hundreds of positive reviews should adequately cover the overall quality of the book. My own experience is much the same - expect increasingly nuanced and interesting characterization of characters you thought you knew, enough action to keep fans of it happy, and a good amount of progression in the plot, which continues to largely revolve around the politics of Westeros.

HIGHLY recommended
