I had to read this book for school, and I didn't like it at all. I didn't even finish it! This is not a good book. DO NOT read it. I don't know how many times I fell asleap while reading. My brother had to wake me up several times. I read all the time, and have finished the 800 page books in about one or two days. This book took me like 2 months. This is the boringist book I have ever read.

This is the story of Karana, a young Indian girl raised on an island off the coast of California. Supposedly it is based on a true story, and it tells of how she survived on her native island after all of her people were removed and her younger brother was killed. The reader never knows why Karana's people were removed from the island, which would have helped me understand the story a bit better.

While Scott O'Dell is a good storyteller, there are some gaps that I wished he had explained better. For instance, when the Aleuts first came to the island when Karana's father was still living, there seems to be no gap in communications. Somehow the Aleuts can communicate with the natives. When the white men come and cart off Karana's people there again is no communication gap. However, after the ... Read More

I remember having to read this book in my sixth grade class and since that time I have re-read it again and again. Lois Lowry paints an amazingly beautiful and accurate tale of bravery and friendship during the Nazi occupation of Denmark in World War II. The imagery and character interactions in this book made it really come to life for me. I recommend this book to people of any age. More than a decade since I first read it, it is still my favorite book of all time!

I feel funny reviewing books that are older than I am (this was published in 1967), but I will share what I thought. I thought this was a cute story, and I don't know how I missed this one when I was young...it seems like it would have been just my style! And, except for a few details (such as how much things cost and the fact that Claudia wears a petticoat), it doesn't feel like it's outdated. I thought a couple of parts were particularly funny, like when Claudia and Jamie find an unopened candy bar on the ground, and Jamie wants to eat it. Claudia says "You better not touch it. It's probably poisoned or filled with marijuana, so you'll eat it and become either dead or a dope addict." How funny!

I have been an avid reader for most of my 59 years, but I STILL say
that this is my FAVORITE book of ALL TIME...no matter what genre...
It matters not that it is "recommended" for 9-12 year olds, if YOU
have not discovered this wonderful story, then you must! So many of
us can identify with Billy, the young boy, reared during a time
of great poverty, and his love and devotion to his two pups and the
adventures and lessons they brought into his life. Believe me,
this is NOT just for children, and if you have any time to reminisce,
get this book and read it...absorb it, enjoy it...A true walk down
Memory Lane. Relish the good things while you can, and THIS ONE
is a "Good Thing!"

Hatchet is one of Gary Paulsen's finest works. I think his goal was to establish a great young adult novel that is easy to become immersed in. He looks to create a book that is enjoyable and also has a lot of useful information about life in the wilderness.
Paulsen, a writer from Minneapolis, writes young adult novels usually about nature. He has written over 200 books, short stories, magazine articles, and plays. He enjoys dog sled racing and has participated in many Iditarod races.
Brian Robeson is trapped in the Canadian wilderness with nothing more than the clothes on his back and a hatchet, given to him by his divorced mother before his trip. He crashes from a bush plane after the pilot has a heart attack and the plane runs out of fuel. He is forced to eat whatever he can find, ... Read More

I don't think I have what one might call a huge interest in Jerusalem. I'm pretty religious and I enjoy studying the religion, but what mostly drew me to this book was not the Jerusalem/Judaisim/Christ aspect but the fact that this was written by Elizabeth George Speare. But it worked well and I have to admire the woman from stepping out of New England for a captivating portrayal of a young man torn between a vow of vengeance and the redeeming power of love. Daniel is someone with whom everyone should be able to identify, determined to do what he feels is right and just. Even with all his intentions of fighting the Romans, he still comes off as an eighteen year-old boy with all of those thoughts and feelings. The writing, as usual for this great writer, is fantastic and detailed without being overwhelming. There is plenty ... Read More

I probably would have liked this book a lot more if:
A - I was 10 years younger
B - I hadn't seen the movie.

I find this review hard to write because I don't want to cast a shadow on a perfectly good book. I imagine young children would love it and find it magical, but more me (I'm 21) I just found it a bit tedious. Especially since I knew the story. All that was really left was the writing style (lots of lots of descriptions, right down to the ripples in the water) which I found annoying.

But I do recommend this book to anyone under the age of 12. Because it really explores the themes of life/death and living forever in a realistic manner.
