A very well written account of the politicos and rocket scientists from the end of WWII to the late 1950s. The detail comes to life as if it were a novel!

In a snapshot world with nano attention spans, Epic Rivalry manages to grab and hold on. The world in 1957 was on the seam between vacuum tube and microchip, between perceived American complacency and Russian Atomic tests that dropped Strontium 90 in milk bottles across the United States. Amid the tension and fear, two clumsy stumbling giants began the race that framed the future and shapes the world view of space to this day.

Von Hardesty and Gene Eisman take you back to the origins, before Sputnik, through its launch in October of 1957 and into the arms of current space. With eloquence and discernment they bring to life the voices of the electrifying story from both sides of the Iron Curtain. There is magic in these pages because what you are hearing isn't competing specifications ... Read More

This book has 4 Amazon reviews, all by the book's author. No wonder they're glowing reviews. Doesn't anyone @ Amazon police this sort of thing?

I think not enough practicing engineers are reviewing this book. I work in the radar imaging field and everyone I talk to at work loves this book. I just started in this field a few months back and I've found this to be much better than Carrera for learning about SAR imaging.

What's great about this book is that it is both clear and concise, which is very difficult to do. I feel like after having read the first two chapters I understand the SAR image formation theory. The tomographic paradigm explored in this book is so much easier to understand than the Doppler filtering ideas presented in other texts. It just makes sense.

The third chapter is also great because it basically gets into the details of how the operations in chapter two are actually performed. The author does a great ... Read More

I must say that I was disappointed in this book. There is very little new information, and while the art work is pleasing to look at, it really doesn't do much to detail equipment and installations. No single space warfare system is really highlighted. The author makes several brief references to the X-20 "Dynasoar", but these aren't substantive and the Air Force's equally interesting Manned Orbiting Laboratory program is completely ignored.

More distressing, in spite of his credentials, there is some reason to question the author's basic knowledge of the physics of space flight. At one point the text seems to suggest that a satellite could be positioned over Korea, almost as though it could hover there. That section could simply be poorly phrased, but elsewhere the text clearly asserts that ... Read More

Anyone who follows either NASA's human spaceflight program or U.S. military ambitions in space has probably heard plenty of rosy forecasts from the government agencies involved (and their contractors) and plenty of skepticism from the wider community. Joan Johnson-Freese is a long-time observer of all of this activity who has given us a lucid assessment of what's going on beneath the surface. The first sentence of her preface tells us that "The United States is currently the preeminent global space power." The rest of the book is a big "however..." that I believe is neatly summarized by her last sentence in Chapter 6: "We are committing strategic suicide."
She chronicles a disturbing array of ill-conceived policies that will lead to programmatic failures (e.g., NASA's Moon-Mars plans) and massive investment ... Read More
