The Golden Goblet by Eloise Jarvis McGraw is about Ranofer, the son of a renowned master goldsmith, who lives in ancient Thebes, Egypt. After both of his parents die, he is "taken care of" by his half-brother Gebu. Ranofer shows us how if we do what we know is right, we make differences in the world that may affect many people.

Ranofer is mistreated by his evil half-brother, Gebu, who hates him and thinks of him as nothing. Ranofer has the potential to be a master goldsmith like his father, but Gebu only lets him have a job cleaning up the scraps and making simple little ingots. Ranofer gives all of his pay to Gebu, and he gets nothing back except a few onions or a little bit of soup once a day. He lives in this miserable state until he is told gold is being stolen from the goldsmith's ... Read More

The protagonist, a thoroughly spoiled youth named Robin, is rendered lame by a disease. Mercifully, and mysteriously enough, a monk comes to his abandoned home, picks him up and brings Robin to a monastery. At this gentle place, as the monk guides him, Robin learns self-discipline and many kinds of practical skills. It is a redemption, though Robin's spirit is still broken about his lame legs.

A wartime crisis comes about and Robin is the only one who can deliver vital information to his father, a lord in service to the king (Robin's mother also serves at the court.)

Robin is successful and this success brings about transformational healing of his spirit. His father's tremendous pride in him brings Robin much joy, and the comfort of his mother is yet another blessing.

I was actually taken back to the time of ancient Egypt! I shivered, got the chills, and laughed out loud at certain parts of the book. It is a REALLY good book. When I borrowed it from the library, I must of renewed it twice to keep it for 2 months! Excellent.

Adam of the Road is a children's novel written by Elizabeth Janet Gray and illustrated by Robert Lawson. It won the Newbery Medal in 1943. Adam of the Road chronicles the adventures of Adam, an eleven year old minstrel in thirteenth-century England, as he travels with his father and dog.

Adam of the Road is over 300 pages, making it rather long for a children's novel (perhaps in this post-Harry Potter era, this is not the case, although Adam of the Road is geared to a younger audience). Adam's adventures keep the book moving fairly well, although it does tend to drag a little toward the end.

The book may hold some interest for adults as well, although they may be off-put by the fairly one-dimensional supporting characters and the narrator's constant explanation of Adam's emotional ... Read More

This book is engaging and funny, smart and clever, profound and simple. It may be the best book I have read this year, because even though written for young readers, it is packed with information.

Ancient Sicily becomes accessible as a culture and lifestyle through this book. And Archimedes' discoveries are made clear through written descriptions and illustrations that are perfect for the text. The information about the way children were instructed in Syracuse, and then about how Archimedes furthered his education, was compelling. The love of learning shines in this book.

The geometry chapters are advanced, but not too difficult. And the section about the war machines he invented was downright fun!

There are immediate applications for learning at home -- creating mobiles ... Read More

I'm reading this to my daughter, who loves the story. Some of the writing is a little complex for a first grader to understand, but this version has a beauty to the poetry of the writing that the DK version, though straightforward and more easily understood, does not.

Highly recommended.
