Do you know how much energy it takes to craft Mister Friedman's fine mOustache? S-tons, that's how much.

So how dare he lecture from his pulpit made of bamboo and dog mess. He thinks HE OWNS ME!?

I'm about to have a bizarro green evolution. Driving my SUV while towing an SUV with the ignition on. Having an aerosol spraying orchestra every Sunday night. Fusion in my backyard.

I am killing the Earth because the Earth is a dumb SOB, that's why.

Well laid out sequel to "Paradise and power". All the more intriguing since it was written before the Russian invasion of Georgia--ominiously predictable from the pages of Kagan's book. Let's hope his transatlantic call to action is heeded.

I got interested in this book when I saw Scott McClellan on "Meet the Press" one morning. It was either Tim Russert's last or next-to-last show before he died suddenly.

I didn't know what to expect from Mr. McClellan, so I watched. I was amazed to see a guy that seemed to be expressing genuine regret to the American people for letting them down. It wasn't exactly his fault, but he does seem to blame himself to some degree. Anyway, I was intrigued by his sincerity--and not only that, but his apparent forthrightness and honesty.

So when I saw the book at the library, I picked it up, and got very interested after just a few pages--you know, the way you do when you read a thriller-type novel. I enjoyed the book for the following reasons:

-It's well written. Good writing ... Read More

This book should be read before The Predator State is read. It is a less detailed, somewhat bias claim the understand the current situation in our economy but it lacks the meat that Galbraith covers in the Predator State.
I do believe that is is worth reading so that some understanding of what we are doing by borrowing so much at this time has caused. We seem to need a good recession to get back our ethics and begin real growth sometime soon. We are in very bad shape and now that the problem has become so large, we cannot just keep feeding the greedy. We need taxes and punishment for the white collar stupid managers that got us here. If only we had the ethics that were in place before the Yuppies and Yippies told us they wanted change but forgot what they were doing due to drugs, we might have been better ... Read More

: The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad
Zakaria is a brilliant mind. I was first introduced to him by some of his writings in Newsweek. His one page articles are often insightful and offer readers new perspectives. I didn't like everything about this book but yet I cannot resist giving it a perfect 5 stars. Zakaria offers readers a new model of looking at societies. His book reminded me of Jarred Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel". Both these books tackle the topic of why certain countries and regions are more prosperous. For example, why are governments in Europe and USA so much more effective than those in the Middle East? Unlike Diamond's book, Zakaria acknowledges many factors including luck. His analysis incorporates many disciplines such as history, religion, philosophy and of course geography. Diamond's emphasis was mainly on geography. Zakaria does ... Read More

I could not set this book down. Three things made it special:

1) The biography and credentials of the author: a West Point grad; retired Army Colonel; Boston College professor; and father of an Army Lieutenant recently killed in Iraq.
2) The writing, which is compact and lively. No point is made without many facts and examples, but no point is flogged to death.
3) The author's underlying ambivalence about America's culture, politics, history, ideology. He does not hate America but struggles to understand it. He weaves observations about America's foundational values into powerful conclusions about the state of our country.

The anti-Bush crowd loves this book, but it is much more than a rant against the current administration. It gave me plenty to think about.

This is an excellent overview of the current world situation and look at what is developing. Political forecasters take note, this is one-stop shopping.

Author does a good job juggling a mountain of information and making a coherent whole out of the disparate world at large.

I was hoping to find a book that I could sink my teeth into and digest some good facts and ideas. I was disappointed wading through this cotton candy environment with little to sink my teeth into. The author provides some interesting ideas and insights but you really need to wade through a lot of biased, agenda driven narrative to find those few nuggets of information.

The author does little to provide a veneer of objectivity. His constant name dropping and references of who he talked to and where does little to provide a base of his authority.

The author seems to enjoy breathing the same rarified air of the elite and obviously wants to be part of their world and espouse their worldview. Due to this obsession and the nature of his job, he must maintain a good working relationship with this network of ... Read More
