I purchased the book because I enjoyed his writing in Spanking the Donkey. I enjoyed the book because I the liberaism was minimal. This book is truly partisan. I quit reading before I was 1/4 of the way as I was so bored.

I got interested in this book when I saw Scott McClellan on "Meet the Press" one morning. It was either Tim Russert's last or next-to-last show before he died suddenly.

I didn't know what to expect from Mr. McClellan, so I watched. I was amazed to see a guy that seemed to be expressing genuine regret to the American people for letting them down. It wasn't exactly his fault, but he does seem to blame himself to some degree. Anyway, I was intrigued by his sincerity--and not only that, but his apparent forthrightness and honesty.

So when I saw the book at the library, I picked it up, and got very interested after just a few pages--you know, the way you do when you read a thriller-type novel. I enjoyed the book for the following reasons:

-It's well written. ... Read More

Taibbi is a journalist similar to Hunter Thompson, and the 'gonzo' style of reporting. He takes no prisoners in his approach to coverage of the ludicrous process of a presidential campaign, with all its distractions, relentless schedule, and lame stump speeches. If you like hard-hitting, no-nonsense political coverage and analysis with a good (though dark) sense of humor, you'll enjoy Matt Taibbi's writing as much as I do. Also recommended is his "Smells like Dead Elephants", because as harsh (and deserved) as his assessment of Democrats is, the republicans get it considerably worse (again, deserved).

Laugh at yourself and the whole world laughs with you. It's hard to write humorous essays that stand the test of time. Will Rogers realized that and just read the newspaper to audiences while adding an occasionally wry quip to get huge laughs. Put those messages into a book, and they wouldn't have lasted.

I haven't heard David Sedaris perform in person (which he does as readings), but I'm told he's marvelous. If you have had that pleasure, you will undoubtedly hear his voice, know his timing, and see his expressions as you read this witty, self-deprecating book. I suspect that such an imagined performance would easily turn this into a five-star book.

"Growth takes place whenever a challenge evokes a successful response that, in turn, evokes a further and different challenge. We have not found any intrinsic reason why this process should not repeat itself indefinitely, even though a majority of civilizations have failed, as a matter of historical fact."--Arnold J. Toynbee, A Study of History

This piece--co-authored by a middle-aged father, his recently-graduated-from-college daughter, and his college-going son--is a collective engagement with Fareed Zakaria's The Post-American World. The father is anxious about how effectively Americans are utilizing the advantage of world-class universities; the daughter is seeking to address the inequity of unequal access to higher education; ... Someone wise once said: to those who understand no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible. Citing "human rights," Meyer and her minions agonize over such practices as waterboarding, sleep deprivation and such. This reveals that she knows nothing about torture as it has been practised our enemies over millenia. The irony of this is that the very people who denounce these interrogative techinques are the same ones who turn a blind eye to the inhuman, agonizingly painful destruction on helpless infants in the cause of "privacy" and "the right to choose." How can any sensible person take the likes of the irrational Bush haters such as Mayer seriously? The book reveals nothing that has not been in the news. Did Mayer complain about Clinton administration policy that Muslim attacks were to be treated ... Read More

This is an outstanding and thoroughly entertaining history of American politics and culture (and how they intertwine) between 1964 - 1972. He details how Nixon succeeded as a politician because he learned lessons early on how to exploit people's fears for his gain. The main premise is that this strategy created the primary ideological divide--think liberal vs. conservative or blue vs. red--that exists in American today. Final paragraph: "How does Nixonland end? It has not ended yet." Even though this premise doesn't always hold up, I still cannot recommend this book highly enough.

When I selected this book I was hoping for a reasonable, logical, structured argument supporting the prosecution of George W. Bush for murder, as the title suggests! Adding to my hope was that the author is an attorney, a former prosecuting attorney, who, according to the jacket, is highly regarded among his colleagues.

Instead, this book was a hate filled emotion based argument against the policy of George W. Bush and Iraq. It could have been written by the family of any of our soldiers wounded or killed in Iraq. Mr. Bugliosi seems to base his entire argument on the fact that President Bush lied to the public before engaging in the war. While I don't disagree with him, that does not make a case for murder. The President is the commander in chief who, unless there is something I am unaware of, has the authority to send the US ... Read More

Great American Hypocrites reminds me of a closing argument at a trial, or a review for a final exam.

If you're well-read, or at least moderately so, there's probably nothing at all new here. John Wayne, George Bush, Dick Cheney, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Rush Limbaugh, Trent Lott, Newt Gingrich, Tom DeLay, Saxby Chambliss, Bill O'Reilly, and a myriad of other members of the GOP and right-leaning media, including just about the whole crew behind the war in Iraq are draft dodgers - chickenhawks. They avoided military service in time of war like the plague and now talk like bad dudes. We know this already.

McCain and Gingrich cheated on their wives, and several GOP congressmen, senators, not to mention men of the cloth with well-documented, right-wing leanings have been in the spotlight for less than God-fearing Christian-like ... Read More
