If you've read earlier reviews, you know the storyline: June's first husband died in a car accident leaving her with a small daughter. The police officer who brought the bad news becomes the knight on the white steed, wooing and winning her and her daughter's affections. Then, just as in old fairy tales, when June is married to the policeman, pregnant and renovating their home, the idyll is disrupted by the evil one, who appears in the guise of a young carpenter. Picoult has carved out a literary niche by her use of simple prose to present themes that disturb and challenge the reader. Few writers are as adept at telling such a story without setting up a complex plot with ten-syllable words. In this book, the naturally spoken conversations among the characters contrast with great effect to the ... Read More

First, I am glad I read the book; if you have a chance: read it. Now my reveiw: The sad emotions were forced and manipulative; yes I cried. But I was more angry about crying because the relationship in the story did not deserve it. The story is more a tragedy than any kind of best friends novel. The 'best friend' is a manipulative horrible person who we are supposed to embrace because she had a terrible childhood. I didn't buy it; To the title of my review: forced...I felt the author forced the emotions in the story, forced a relationship that just would not exist. The lead character was a doormat for her best friend. I enjoy other books in this genre - I enjoy a good story, but this was not.

Interesting story, but this is not worth the time to read, as the characters are poorly defined and the writing is pretty amateurish. I'd read "The Good Mother" years ago and loved it, but this book is a turnoff to reading anything else by her. It's hard to empathize with any of the characters, who all seem one-dimensional and amoral. She writes as though she is making epiphanies about women, marriage, etc. but they did not resonate with me.

This book was lousy, just another in the long line of flops for Grisham. I miss the old style of great story telling, this was to slow, never really got my attention, I read a lot of other books, kept coming back to this one to finish, finally my wife said, just put it away. I did, save your money on this one. I'm still holding out for a great story to come along.

It saddens me to say, but the phenomenal author formerly known as Danielle Steel no longer exists. She has hit rock bottom, although imo it would take just ONE quality, impressive novel to restore her former glory, with the condition that she CONTINUE to put out quality over quantity. The plot was interesting enough, but I must agree with other reviews in the fact that her writing has become atrociously elementary, repetitive and laughably unresearched. It shocks me that reputable publishing companies will put material like this out based on a "brand name", while truly magnificent material from thousands of would be/should be authors gets tossed to the trash heap before they even get a fair review. Before reading this book I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that it couldn't be any worse than 'Bungalow 2'. I was right in that assumption, ... Read More

This always seems to happen, an author reaches a certain point and they run out of new ideas and plots. It's always disappointing, but you keep up hope. I have enjoyed some of Rice's "newer" novels, I'd put this on that list. But at the same token, the plots & characters seem recycled.

Again, overall I liked this book, but I am just looking for something fresh and new. I don't want to read the same sorts of stories and characters over & over. I did like that this book gave us a change of scenery being mainly in France. But even that wasn't enough to get over the fact that the characters reminded me of so many others of Rice's.

A good read, fun, romantic, but if you've read all of Rice's others, this won't be anything new for you.

I was delightfully surprised by a Patterson book that escapes the confines of his usual murder mystery novels and suspends the very reality that makes many of his other novels so powerful. I related greatly to Jane as a child, and it brought back many of my own painful memories that were good to visit in a positive environment. The authors didn't dwell on the negative and made what could have been a depressing situation into a light, refreshing story. It kept me wondering, along with Jane (and Michael), as to exactly who Michael was and what he would do next. His friends were just the right touch to lend credence to the story without being too much. Refreshing also was the sweet, innocent romance and Michael's becoming self-aware. The chapters were, in true Patterson style, short and sweet, which made the story flow and made it easy for me to ... Read More

I am a longtime fan of this author. However, how does an accomplished author like this get away with such glaring errors in the book? Two examples; Paige goes to talk to the girls at the school after Friday's funeral. Why then, do they get in trouble for not attending the mandatory study hall which takes place Sunday through Thursday evenings? It's Friday! Also, reference is made to it being near Labor Day, as well as it being the beginning of summer. Did she mean Memorial Day? These are just a couple that I noticed right off the bat. I expect an author of this caliber to be more accurate, and not leave these items in the hand of the editor and proof reader.

I am a big fan of Mary Higgins Clark but this book was not as fast paced and intriguing as others. I was intrigued by the disappearance of the heroine's brother, by his Mother's Day calls every year and all the aspects of this story. I read the book quickly to get to the end of the mystery, which I will not reveal here. It is a good story worth reading but I liked other books from this author better. For instance, "Two little girls in blue" was much more exciting and suspenseful.
