I remember when this story broke, and I couldn't believe that a large Satanic cult was in such proximity to where I lived. With each new announcement, the story got more and more strange, but was always portrayed in the news as absolute fact. Only much later did it fade from the news. This story exposes the true insanity of the case, and how easy it was for an entire country to fall prety to complete madness in what it would believe.

As a person who has long tried to understand how this person could be a part of the horrible things he did, this book is very revealing. Through the use of first-hand accounts from people who interacted with bin Laden at different phases of his life, the reader sees how a person very strict muslim views are radicalized to the point where killing innocent people becomes a real option. Mr. Bergen's work is pretty rigorous and he's to be commended for it. I purchased the audio version of this book and I thought he did a good job, although I could have done without some of the inflection he used to differentiate between Bergen's words and the first-hand experiences of those interviewed.

Interesting reading, though probably not the book you'll want to carry-on for your next flight. Obviously one-sided arguments, but quite striking in their 1) vehemence and 2) repetitiveness (as noted within, probably to help with indoctrination). Gives some insight into "The Arab Mind," though - hopefully- not most of them.

Having read this, not sure what to call it, in 2008 in retrospect this writing has not proved valid. To charecterize bin Laden as "distinguished" one wonders how the author would define Joe Stalin, Adolph Hitler, Idi Amin etc. Bin Laden has a "passion for martydom" seems easy enough to accomplish yet he has avoided "martydom" for more than 10 years. "Bin Laden has survived by the grace of God ... just as Iraq's Saddem Hussein has kept his regime intact". AHH on second thought... To compare this terrorist with the heros of the American Revolution is pure drivil. Who were the suicide bombers in 1776? Bin Laden started the jihad because american military were stationed in Saudi Arabia. Why where they there? Because bin Laden was trying to overthrow the Saudi government. Compared to his earlier book, The Imperial Grunts, this one is not as good but it enhanced my view of the US Military much more than the "Imperial Grunts" since that book was mostly written about the ground forces deployed around the world. This one is about the naval, air forces and ground forces altogether but its emphasis is more on Air Force and Navy. It's a very informative book on the status of the US military and its future. Robert D. Kaplan is an able author with tons of knowledge about the past and he wonderfully mixes the past with present and then predicts the future to the best of his ability. I recommend his books to the military and political enthusiasts.

This is an excellent book and provides numerous examples about looking at the root causes of terrorism. The author uses a somewhat scientific approach to looking at the root causes of terrorism, for example, he looked at the ages of terrorists, their education and background to debunk current thinking that terrorists have been disenfrancised. Instead he looks at radical islamists/terrorist as having been influenced by radical peers, the Iraqi invasion and the internet chat rooms. There is much to be said about "leaderless jihad" because terrorists evolve not as recruits of a central body but as separate groups that take the jihad on their own.He further defines future efforts and approaches to combat this "leaderless jihad".
