This second volume contains three of the best tales in the entire Conan saga: "The People of the Black Circle", "Hour of the Dragon" and "A Witch Shall be Born". "People" is Howard's Hyborian vision of the Talbot Mundy tales of the Khyber Pass. It is some of the best writing Howard ever did in a spell-binding story. "Dragon" is a kind of best of Conan tale which uses elements from other Conan stories, which makes sense when you realize this story was intended as a novel to be published in Britain. Since it was assumed that most people who would read it never encountered Conan in Weird Tales, he incoporated the best elements from other stories into a novel length adventure. Ultimately, this fell through and the story found a home as a serial in WT. "Witch" probably has the most famous scene ... Read More

I will just make this short and to the point. 'speechless'.
He was a master at storytelling. I would recommend this to any one who enjoys the sword/sorcery genre. I have this in hardbound, but cannot find vol 1 and 2 in hardbound.

Dressed in black with the tall slouch-hat typical of Puritan fashion, and armed with sword, flint-locks, and, later, an ancient carved staff, Solomon Kane stalks the 16th century world from the remote reaches of Europe to the bloody decks of the high seas, and into the deepest, darkest African jungles. Whether it be a witch-cursed monstrosity, hell-spawned vampire, mutant throw-back, or just a wicked wretch of humankind, Solomon Kane will fight with equal determination and enthusiasm to see good triumph.

Robert E. Howard's tales are so alive, you almost have to check yourself for wounds. Between the lines broods an ancient feeling of melancholy that lends such realism to the writing. And the beautiful, sweeping illustrations in this book by the award-winning artist Gary Gianni bring that ... Read More

Kull, the Atlantean exile that became King of Valusia, is far more than simply a precursor of Conan, though some of the parallels are striking. The physical descriptions of the two are similar, though Kull's grey eyes were replaced by Conan's blue eyes. But the Kull stories stand very well on their own. This volume, including all of the published Kull stories as well as several unpublished ones (including drafts and fragments), belongs in every Howard admirer's library. H.P. Lovecraft was a friend (via mail correspondence, not in person) of Howard's, and expressed great admiration for the Kull stories in a letter to Howard - though by the time he did, Howard's Kull muse had deserted him. He was on to Conan at that time.

The illustrations by Gary Gianni are excellent, and add considerably to the overall ... Read More

There are so many good things about this book! The introduction is superb! Here's a small sample by Rusty Burke, 'Robert E. Howard (1906-1936), in a writing career that spanned less than a dozen years, created many memorable fantasy adventure characters, such as Conan, Kull, and Solomon kane, who continue to thrill readers long after they first appeared in the legendary magazine, Weird Tales. The seemingly endlessly inventive author also created enormously popular characters in other genres, such as the wester tall tales of Breckenridge Elkins, the rollicking misadventrues of Sailor Costigan, and the Middle Easdtern exploits of El Borak and Kirby O'Donnell. But of all the many characters he created, none seem to have held for the Texas author a fascination to equal that of the people he called Picts, and their great ... Read More

This book is excellent because it pertains to comics by writer Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema. It also contains Dark Horse Comics. You'll really enjoy this book. Back during the Seventies Roy Thomas at Marvel obtain the rights of Conan. Barry Windsor Smith drew the first Conan comic. Now it's currently done by Dark Horse and it's even better! Also during the seventies Marvel printed up Black & White magazines on Conan, Soloman Kane, Kull & more about 68 pages. There's a lot of neat stories, articles, and information about REH = Soul & Inspiration.

Also recommended: Two Gun Bob, One Who Walked Alone, Blood & Thunder,The Life&Art of REH, The Last of the Trunk, Black Stranger Lord of Samarcand, Selected Letters, Kull, Bran Mak Morn, Soloman Kane (Vampire killer), Cormac Mac Art, Crimson Shadows I & ... Read More

This was my first foray into MMORPG's. I had just built a gaming PC, so my hardware was first rate and ready to go. The graphics and animation are great. I heard that people were having problems with it, but I did not have any (well one time their server was down but nothing having to do with the PC).

I am still trying to get the hang of using the mouse with the WASD keys and keyboard to fight. I'm more of an Xbox or PS2 controller guy. But the problems were that with the kids, the only time I had to play was after 10 PM, but then I'd end up playing until 2 or 3 AM. Then having to get up at 6 AM for work took it's toll. I lasted about 2 months.

I haven't played in awhile, so I probably have to start over with my fight training. I still haven't gotten the hang of the combos. I would recommend this game ... Read More

I've been a Robert E. Howard fan for years having read all of his original Conan stories and many of his other works. The enjoyment of this game comes down to which class you pick. For example the Assassin class (a typical rogue class) can be fun but is very frustrating to play since its so easy to die when soloing. A Dark Templar (a dark fighter who leeches health from enemies) is much easier and thus, more enjoyable to play.

Pros:
+ This game visually captures that world in all of its grim beauty. Amazing backgrounds, detailed areas, and characters that all look different and dress in appropriate clothes for their job. Level 80 characters don't 'shimmer and glow' like the 70's in WoW. In fact, unless you put your cursor over them, you can't tell.
+ Interactive combat system
+ Mature rated game giving ... Read More

Warning! Do not buy this product. The discs are DEFECTIVE. Towards the end of the first movie - Conan the Destroyer - there is serious digital artifacting that ruins both the video and the sound and sometimes even stops the disc entirely. This has been the case with all three copies that I have purchased.

I'm very happy with Darkhorse's reprints of the Savage Sword of Conan magazines. The quality is excellent and they are collected in the order they were originally printed. The wonderful stories and terrific artwork are still as timeless as they were back in the early 70's.
