I bought this book because of several reviews. I was given the impression that it was an honest and objective book on the times, I was greatly disappointed. This is someone from a very large family or there's only a handful of people writing reviews under many different names, most of which are just plain bunk. In any case the book is anything but objective. But I did find the proper place for it, the city dump!

Jeremy Scahill's "Blackwater" reads more like a straightforward history book than the explosive investigation the book claims to be. His style is to report the facts and not make assumptions, giving numbers and telling narratives while none of his facts are particularly incriminating and he seems hesitant to look at the big picture. Blackwater is a huge right wing company, but Scahill doesn't really show why that should worry people (it should). If the book is written as a warning, it fails to convey the significance of Blackwater's role in the military nor does it look at the larger picture of having a for-profit private mercenary company that is shamelessly partisan doing the job of American soldiers.

Scahill's cautious reporting leaves a progressive like me not feeling any more ... Read More

Economists properly equipped with a balanced combination of heart and brains did not need the Nobel Prize in order to recognize Paul Krugman's valuable contribution both to the "dismal science" and to the global public discourse (such as it is...). "The Conscience of a Liberal" is a sine-qua-non for anyone caring to analyze the current global financial (and real-economy) crisis. It isd also a great springboard for a search for the right policy mix to attain viable solutions to the huge problem we are all facing.

Great book, just loved how it made me see the things that were so much part of my life and that I wouldn't question.

Now my views are different, I catch the logos, I catch the subtle messages, I catch the hidden messages that drive me into the consumer that I am, and understand better why, how and who is behind all of it.

This book is well researched, and even if written almost ten years ago, not much has changed in the world of marketing and how we are tricked into buying the things we don't need from across the world.

A great read.

Someone wise once said: to those who understand no explanation is necessary; to those who do not, none is possible. Citing "human rights," Meyer and her minions agonize over such practices as waterboarding, sleep deprivation and such. This reveals that she knows nothing about torture as it has been practised our enemies over millenia. The irony of this is that the very people who denounce these interrogative techinques are the same ones who turn a blind eye to the inhuman, agonizingly painful destruction on helpless infants in the cause of "privacy" and "the right to choose." How can any sensible person take the likes of the irrational Bush haters such as Mayer seriously? The book reveals nothing that has not been in the news. Did Mayer complain about Clinton administration policy that Muslim attacks were to ... Read More

When I selected this book I was hoping for a reasonable, logical, structured argument supporting the prosecution of George W. Bush for murder, as the title suggests! Adding to my hope was that the author is an attorney, a former prosecuting attorney, who, according to the jacket, is highly regarded among his colleagues.

Instead, this book was a hate filled emotion based argument against the policy of George W. Bush and Iraq. It could have been written by the family of any of our soldiers wounded or killed in Iraq. Mr. Bugliosi seems to base his entire argument on the fact that President Bush lied to the public before engaging in the war. While I don't disagree with him, that does not make a case for murder. The President is the commander in chief who, unless there is something I am unaware of, has the authority ... Read More

After a life of `robbing from the poor and giving to the rich' as an economic hit man, thereby pocketing his commissions, John Perkins became an environment activist and a militant for change in the policies of the corporatocracy.

Corporatocracy
The author delivers in this book many well directed punches into the face of his former employers, transnational companies which act as imperial dictatorships in the global economy.
Together with their long arms (controlled or corrupt governments, the IMF, the World Bank, the WTO, intelligence services, infiltrated or outright controlled NGOs and the military) the corporations are building an empire for the wealthy few. Behind the rhetoric of `free trade', `free markets` and `free choice' the author discovers disinformation, corruption, oligopolies and market and export protection. ... Read More

8.Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches by: John W. Dean

: Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branches
Sadly, Dean has wasted his notable experience and writing skill in a predictably transparent partisan attack on, ironically, bi-partisan conservative attacks on the Constitution and balance of powers. For young people unfamilar with history -- note the irony that Dean knew about criminal activity in the highest postions of the executive branch in the early 70's and did not act to defend the USA and the constitution -- yet when his own skin was at risk he sang like a canary to force his friends and associates in jail. Trustworthy? Credibility? You judge.

Note that Dean cites exactly ZERO incidents of indiscretions/abuses committed by democrat/liberal pols while focusing his rant on lesser republican indiscretions. Oftentimes he boldly quotes prominent arch-liberals who themselves have been or are under investigation -- Conyers, Kennedy, Wright, ... Read More

This book should be read before The Predator State is read. It is a less detailed, somewhat bias claim the understand the current situation in our economy but it lacks the meat that Galbraith covers in the Predator State.
I do believe that is is worth reading so that some understanding of what we are doing by borrowing so much at this time has caused. We seem to need a good recession to get back our ethics and begin real growth sometime soon. We are in very bad shape and now that the problem has become so large, we cannot just keep feeding the greedy. We need taxes and punishment for the white collar stupid managers that got us here. If only we had the ethics that were in place before the Yuppies and Yippies told us they wanted change but forgot what they were doing due to drugs, we might have been better off today. They failed and they failed by huge ... Read More

: Free Lunch: How the Wealthiest Americans Enrich Themselves at Government Expense (and StickYou with the Bill)
When writing a book about problems in economic policy, the author of such a book should pick an objective. Some authors have an objective of educating the public by pointing out policies or unintended consequences of policies that the public might not be aware of. An educational piece should cite statutes and sources of information and statistics MUCH more thoroughly than this book. This book presented a terribly disorganized one-sided story of the facts.

Usually, the second objective of a book of this type is to propose solutions. This book contained a chapter called "What to Do?" roughly 6 pages long, 4 of those pages were just more ranting to make people upset; the last 2 pages of "solutions" were no solutions at all. I was not impressed with the book.

He had a good intent - to bring to light all the injustice involved with "welfare ... Read More
