I did not expect that a book, or a dramatic work, could dig so deep into the fundamental questione of human existence: who are you? and where are you going? Another milestone in McCarthy's career.

All of McCarthy's writing is at times disturbing, but this book is perhaps the most twisted of the six I have read. The main character is a Tennessee hermit, Lester Ballard, similar to though less refined than McCarthy's Cornelius Suttree. In the beginning of the book, Ballard is evicted from his land and takes up residence in an abandoned house in the woods, then later in a cave. He roams the woods like a specter, hunting rifle under his arm, scavenging for discarded items he can use in his home. During one of these wanderings, he comes across a dead man and woman in a parked car. He carries the woman's body back to his home and keep her for carnal purposes. CHILD OF GOD is probably the most unsettling book I've read since A.M. Homes' The End of Alice. Part of what makes the book so difficult to read ... Read More

The language of this relatively short novel is beautiful and haunting. Even though McCarthy's writing style has changed a little with each book over the past 40 years, each stage along the way has its own unique brilliance, and the somewhat sparce prose of "Outer Dark" is no exception. McCarthy has an ability like no other author I've read to describe a landscape - both exterior or interior - with such startling clarity and yet with such few words. McCarthy has no need for interior monologue, excessive dialogue, or an omniscient narrator; with the slightest subtle gestures he shares intimate and profound emotions and concepts with his reader. "Outer Dark" (as well as McCarthy's other works) is brilliant in this way.
The novel is also quite disturbing. Although they are only in a few short scenes, ... Read More

Cormac McCarthy is best known for his later novels Blood Meridian, The Border Trilogy: All the Pretty Horses, the Crossing, Cities of the Plain, and No Country for Old Men. Set in a remote Tennessee community, his first novel, The Orchard Keeper (1965), first caught the attention of Albert Erskine (William Faulkner's editor) at Random House with its obvious Faulkner influences. The Orchard Keeper reads like a Faulkner novel, and will appeal to anyone who enjoys Faulkner. It tells the simple story of John Wesley Rattner, a teenage boy, and Marion Sylder, the outlaw who killed Rattner's father, Kenneth Rattner. Both characters are oblivious to this connection. The novel follows the evolving dynamics between these two characters, and not only reveals the early genius of Cormac McCarthy, but promises his much greater ... Read More

Incomprehensible..Boring, A waste of money..
I you want to spend time trying to unravel what the heck this man is trying to say, then do so..I gave it my best shot and in disgust tossed it into the waste basket.

I read this final volume of the "Border Trilogy" because I had read the first two. I was massively disappointed with the plot. It is far more pessimistic and dark than the first two volumes, and can leave the reader depressed. Yes, indeed, the language is as outstanding as ever, and one can hear the authentic speech of people in the particular place and time, but personally, I found that to be another reason to find the plot depressing: the more you feel for the characters, the more you want them to come out of the story at least somewhat intact.

All I can say without giving away too much is that those of us who feel compelled to finish this set of books need to get ready for a serious downer.

You know, reading other reviews makes me realize that my problem is not a unique one; I have now read several of McCarthy's novels, and would not exactly say that I have enjoyed any of them. Yet I keep returning.

There are themes running through every one of his novels, that he returns to again and again. A young protagonist, often family-less, or about to be, wandering the desert looking for nothing in particular. McCarthy also seems to have a fascination with Mexico (or, in the case of The Road, whatever lies to the south) and of course violence. Pointless violence, meaningless violence, unresolved violence.

As others have pointed out, the first third of this novel has more of a plot than we have come to expect from McCarthy. It may comprise some of the best writing that McCarthy has done. But the middle ... Read More

I'm sure many of the folks who read books like this are fans of post-apocalyptic survival, and no doubt we've read a few good ones and a lot of stinkers. James Van Pelt's "Summer of the Apocalypse" is just what I was looking for, and it didn't disappoint.

First let me start with a negative -- a very small one. There are a few typos or improper uses of words as if the editing wasn't done well. It was something I noticed, and as I found these entries, my involvement in the story temporarily slowed because of what I considered bad grammar. There weren't a lot of these items, but enough to make me comment on them obviously (as I recall, one was a case of "you're" instead of "your"). With that said, this book is fantastic.

I don't normally like books with multiple timelines, because I don't particularly enjoy having to order ... Read More

I don't usually read plays, but I bought this one because, after finishing _Cities of the Plain_, I had read all of Cormac McCarthy's novels and was hungry for more. I was not disappointed. McCarthy's genius is no less evident in _The Stonemason_ than in any of his longer works; if anything, the shorter format of drama allows him to pack even more of his brilliant writing into every page. Many authors are said to have "an ear for dialogue"; McCarthy is the only one I know, of whom this is unquestionably true. Perhaps this explains the effortlessness with which he switches between his usual milieu (novels about white cowboys and outlaws) to the material in this book (a play about black craftsmen). Any more praise I can give to this work, and to McCarthy's other writings, cannot convey the tremendous power -- the sadness and joy - that ... Read More

10.Blood Meridian (Picador Books) by: Cormac McCarthy

 : Blood Meridian (Picador Books)
As I read Blood Meridian, I jotted down words that were either unusual or new to me or familiar yet not quite recognizable. This is the case with every McCarthy book one reads - astonishment at the writer's extensive vocabulary. I've deliberately left out most of the directly Spanish terms or Mexican off-shoots. So, anyway, here is one list of words you need to know in order to read Blood Meridian thoroughly. Each reader can come up with a similar list, I am sure.
THE LIST: swale; sprent; carbolic; coping (not the verb); swagged; chancel; sacristy; purlieu; awap; ramada; weskit; mortice; felloes; duledge; panniers; jornada; bistre; suttee; jacal; cantle; bandoliers; manciple; midden; revetment; charivari; imbreachment; withy; vidette; dunnage; thrapple; morral; selvage; lazarous; galena; sotol; kerf; stanched; tonsured; talus; vadose; ...
