Fareed Zakaria has really given a great deal of thought to globalization and its larger meaning, and it is obvious for almost all to see. His thoughts on how the U.S., India, China, and Russia should interact are spot on. His use of statistics is pretty much a welcomed blessing because it helps remove many of the doubts that critics can present upon hearing his core idea. It flies starkly in the face of the notion that U.S. power is diminishing due to globalization. This nation according to Zakaria is as strong/relevant as it ever been, meaning that we ultimately decide what our nation's fate will be. A must read for those of us that are not buying the Lou Dobbs, O' Reilly xenophobic non-sense!!

Utterly paranoid viewpoint from someone who cobbled together a book with a skewed viewpoint. I wouldn't be surprised that he feels black helecopters are hovering above his house.

This is an excellent book and provides numerous examples about looking at the root causes of terrorism. The author uses a somewhat scientific approach to looking at the root causes of terrorism, for example, he looked at the ages of terrorists, their education and background to debunk current thinking that terrorists have been disenfrancised. Instead he looks at radical islamists/terrorist as having been influenced by radical peers, the Iraqi invasion and the internet chat rooms. There is much to be said about "leaderless jihad" because terrorists evolve not as recruits of a central body but as separate groups that take the jihad on their own.He further defines future efforts and approaches to combat this "leaderless jihad".

well, not this book actually, but a related book by Parag Khanna titled The Second World.

Some of the various, and numerous, factual errors that riddle the book are relatively trivial, but suggest serious sloppiness and disregard for getting facts right. For example, Yugoslavia was not part of Warsaw pact, as Khanna states. Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov was appointed to office in 1992 by Boris Yeltsin, and not by Vladimir Putin. Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia and Albania are not all smaller by population than Manhattan, and the death toll from the civil wars in former Yugoslavia was not greater than half a million. Other obviously wrong assertions seem to be made up simply to provide lurid background color to Khanna's travelogue: the former KGB headquarters in Moscow has not been turned into "a high-class ... It's great that America is to blame for everything but if you look at the ideology of Al Qaeda they do not care who they deem is wrong. In their eyes they deal with what they do not like with a sword not a kind word. Look at the bombings in Spain, last I heard Spain was not into world dominance like the US apparently is.
I also noticed that the Taliban and Al Qeda had no problem blowing up those Buddhist statues in Afghanistan. We all know that for centuries the Buddhist's have worked hard to rule the world with their interfering ways and policies. They have NO Tolerance for things they do not sanction plain and simple.
I think it is time to wake up if was not the US it would have been some other country they viewed as being unworthy of existence. The US is not entirely to blame for the mixed up ideology these people ... Read More

Of many books I have read on the misdeeds and mistakes of the Bush Administration in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the War on Terror generally, this is the best. Its impact sinks in page after page, horrific detail after horrific detail.

Bob Woodward is incredible, in that he somehow is able to get the key players in one of the worst political disasters since Watergate to open up to him, and lay their faults out there for all to see.

The actions of the Bush administration are so hard to fathom , that were it not for Mr. Woodward's first person account, we would not believe it was possible, in this day and age.

Woodward's style, as shown in his previous works, makes this book a page turner, with all the details to put the reader right there, and able to appreciate all the nuances that went into the decision making processes of the war obsessed Bush administration, warts and all.

Don't be mistaken, this is not a novella, nor is it a history book. It is an unabashed detailed account of the running of a war that will go down in history ... Read More

OK. After glancing at the excellent reviews, I probably will continue to read this book. I am giving a rating only because posting the review requires it. In fact, I haven't finished the book. But what caused me to leave the book to see what others thought of it is this:
On page 30, upon Burton's entering the CIA headquarters for the first time, I read "" ... a statue of Nathan Hale, a Revolutionary War spy who went to a British hangman's noose with the immortal words 'Give me liberty or give me death' on his lips."
Give me liberty or give me death? Those are certainly immortal words! Nathan Hale? It's been quite a while since I took American history, but that quote is attributed to Patrick Henry. Hale is remembered for the words "I regret that I have but one life to give to my country."
So what made me pause in my reading - and ... Read More
