Notwithstanding comparisons with the movie, this is a very creative and classic horror/sci-fi novella. The plot is essentially that a virus has been unleashed on the earth that has turned everyone in the world into vampires. One man has the anecdote and was able to remain untouched by the virus; however he has as yet been unsuccessful in saving others from the virus. Thus, by day the main character hunts the vampires and conducts his experiments against them. And by night, the vampires attempt to break into his "fortress" and destroy him. The vampires seem to loath the fact that someone exists who is not like them and has seemingly remained untouched by the virus.

This is essentially the premise and of course, something has got to give....

What a yawner. The military personnel was stereotypic. The government agents were stereotypic. All the various and sundry players were out a bad scifi channel made for TV movie; all one dimensional and predictable. There was no one I really cared about. I can't believe that people thought this was a good zombie book. The writing was juvenile at best. I've read better plots in comic books. I should have paid more attention to the bad reviews they were much more accurate. And the bad thing is I bought the second book too.

If you google Kim Paffenroth you will discover that he is a very accomplished professor of humanities, most recently the author of one of the finest books on George Romero out there. Bear this in mind and you will have some idea of what to expect from Dying to Live.

The novel follows Jonah Caine as he joins a reconstituted town after the zombie uprising and their efforts to rebuild a dignified human existence. The writing style is easy to follow if not exceptionally crafted, but this is par for the course in zombie lit. What really makes Paffenroth's story come alive is the play of ideas about what it means to be human--which is the perfect topic for meditation in a zombie world. In general he does not go overboard on gory descriptions but there is one scene that is truly worthy of Dante ... Read More

How to Survive a Robot Uprising- This book was more non-fiction than I would have thought. Sure it has some pretty funny lines, but it is very educational on the state of current robotics and technology that will inhabit future robots. Given recent new about man-hunting robots, this book is kinda scary. It isn't a hands down survival guide the way that the Zombie survival guide was, but it was fairly good. It is on the short side, but it was feeling kinda stretched by that point anyways. I would recommend it go on your shelf by The Zombie Survial Guide.

I'd been excited to read David Wellington's Monster Island since I first heard about it. The core idea (the survivor of a George Romero zombie holocaust has to head in to a Manhattan island that has been overrun with the walking dead) is terrific. So it's Escape from New York meets Dawn of the Dead. What could go wrong?

Well, a couple of things. David Wellington makes a few unique twists to the standard George Romero zombie rules that I could have lived with, I guess. You have to expect that a writer is going to make a subject their own. But the mummies were just one step too far over the line for my taste. A little too comic-book-y for me. Also, the alternating Gary chapters would make for a neat short story maybe, but I wasn't too keen on following a thread showing things from a zombies' point of view ... Read More

The only originality of this book is that it kind of takes us under the skin of a freshly dead woman. Not quite the dumb, mindless walking zombies, she's got a role to play in the newly breaking, fast spreading infection that turns human beings into flesh eaters. She is being led to a special place where she thinks she's got something to do for her own sake -and mankind's.
She is being tracked by a middle-rank Reserve Captain that, although not consciously capable of saying why, wants to get the dead -but not quite zombified- freshly dead young woman.
Difficult to say exactly why this book did not get my full attention throughout the reading, but let's try anyway. The characters are not likable. They are hollow people with no clearly defined personality. Nothing in their behavior or intimate depiction, deserves ... Read More

This book was ok, but not really that much depth to it. It also leaves more questions than answers, which is usually a good thing, but in this instance it wasn't. I had just read the watchmen before I read this so it seemed pretty weak.

One thing I really, truly like about Watchmen, that sets it apart from other works of superhero fiction, is the way it treats its heroes. They, on the most part, are fully aware of how silly dressing up in a theatrical costume and running around fighting crime is, and the more sane amongst them treat the enterprise as very tongue-in-cheek. With the exception of one hero they have no powers, and thus distinguishing between one hero or heroine and the next becomes highly character-driven rather than "oh he's the guy with the claws" or "oh he has the eye lasers".

Speaking of characters, the characters here are extremely well-written. Two examples:
- Rorschach is a vigilante detective with a sordid past and a rapidly deteriorating psyche. By the opening of the story he considers his Rorschach persona to take presidence ... Read More
