1.Armageddon: The Battle for Germany, 1944-1945 by: Max Hastings

: Armageddon: The Battle for Germany, 1944-1945
First off, I graded this moreso on how difficult a read this was and not so much the content. There is no doubt that Hastings thoroughly researched this material. It's all here and then some. I've read the reviews about incorrect details which is something I can forgive when such a broad subject is covered.

For me, the difficult part was keeping it all tied together - it may not be the author's fault - more of a personal limitation. Be warned, if you aren't interested in having most if not all major and minor events broken down and examined, then this may not be the book for you. The overall story is here in spades, but several chapters overlap and repeat upon past events already covered. I understand why this is done, but there is so much here it can be overwhelming. This won't ... Read More

If you're looking for a miltary-centric exposition of the last days of world war 2 in europe, you'll be disappointed with this. There is no discussion of which force did what, when and why. There are no maps with thrusts and front lines, offensives and retreats, battles.

What it is is a chronicle of aftermath. The aftermath of conquest and defeat, death camps and the implosion of two countries (Italy and Germany) from within the massive conflagration they initiated. Carrying the narrative is a number of real people caught up in the maelstrom of the defeat of the axis powers. These range from the daughter of Ulrich Von Hassell, who carries the burden of sippenhaft (family debt) for her father. This involves losing her children, trips through camps as an inmate with other prominent nazi prisoners ... Read More

I can't really give you a review of the book I purchased because I never read it. My youngest son (actually my baby, only in his late 40's)has a birthday in October. Its hard to buy something for someone who lives half way across the country from you. It seems to get harder each year. I know he reads a lot, but so do I. However I like to pick out my own books and figured he would feel the same way. I know we do not read the same type of books so except for sending him gift cards I have never sent him a book. This year though, I came out and said "what Would you like for your birthday? He immediately answered "The Day of Battle: the war in Sicily and Italy, 1943- 1944 (The Liberation Trilogy)" He was currently reading the first book and really liked it and even told me where to find it on Amazon. I ordered it ... Read More

The Coldest Winter by David Halberstam is not a perfect history of the Korean War. There were two historical facts missing which I think any credible historian would have to mention. One is the incident at the Bridge of Tokun Ri where hundreds of civilians were killed by American troops in what is euphenistically known as a "friendly fire" incident. The other is the disgraceful conduct of the all-Black 92nd Regiment which was disbanded as "unbreliable" after they broke ranks and ran to the rear after hearing their first gunshot. History is a moving target and the first casualty in war is the truth. Here's a tip. Go to any library and check out the books of history of the Vietnam War. If you find no reference to "fraggings", you know you aren't going to read the whole truth but one that has been sanitized. Fraggings ... Read More

I finished this book last nite. Gads, what did we do? How was this extermination of the Indians allowed by a loving god, let alone by us Christian white people? I wonder we can live with ourselves. I know it's easy to judge the dead, the times and dangers were so different,..still I can't believe our policy, even our glory, was to kill women and children and old men. As a Republican white middle class guy,..after reading this book I just feel tremendously ashamed. Like I committed a murder and never got punished for it. I want to make amends for what we did to the native americans. I want to take my family to Little Big Horn Park, ..I want to show my kids the whole story from both sides. Thank you, author, for an exceptional labor of love in this very moving book.

As I was reading this book, the chilling thought constantly occurred to me: what would W (or Cheney) have done. The answer is to that question is what is so compelling about this book. Dobbs has some answers to this question in the afterword, which should not be skipped. Also, it turns out that Krushchev was pragmatic man who was unwilling to risk nuclear war for the glory of the USSR (Russia). Looks like maybe Putin is no Krushchev either.

: The Greatest Battle: Stalin, Hitler, and the Desperate Struggle for Moscow That Changed the Course of World War II
For true historians this might not be the greatest story about the WWII fight for the Nazi war machine to overwhelm Moscow. However, for casual readers such as myself--with a mild interest in history--this was an eye-opener. The author mainly points out how both Hitler and Stalin tried to outdo their own generals. Don't forget that Stalin killed off many of his pre-war generals and took over too much of the directions himself. Had the battles been left to the proper knowledgeable officers, the final outcome might have been different. Hitler's thought was that if Germany "owned" Moscow, he would expect a complete collapse of Russia. Then, in turn, he would once again go after Britain. Stupid fool, however, delayed his initial Panzer attacks for a month so as to take care of some not-so-important areas. Thus, the German army fought not only the poorly ... Read More

The nifty phrase of John Randolph of Roanoke seems appropriate.

Why, in a book that spends so much time on national cemeteries and mentions Montgomery Meigs several times, is there a complete omission of the sad and regretful story of how Arlington National Cemetery was created by Meigs as a deliberate affront to prevent the Lee family from ever again living in their home? Was it to avoid the story of the federal government refusing the payment of taxes by third parties and insisting on in-person appearance by Lee? Or the theft of the family furnishings, down to the slaughtering of Lee's daughter's pet pony? Or the visit many years later by Mrs. Lee at her childrens' urging, with her first view so sickening her that, bursting into tears, she would not alight from the carriage and left, never to return?

I was interested in the premise of this ... Read More

Although I told myself I wouldn't, I finally did break down and pay hardcover price for Alan Furst's latest. I just can't stay away from Furst novels, nor can I imagine why I'd want to.

There's still lots of atmosphere and a more recognizable plot than some of his novels have. This takes place in Warsaw and France, and the protagonist is French. Writing France of this period is Furst's strongest suit and this plot, although based primarily in Poland, lets him use plenty of French detail. In Warsaw, Colonel Mercier, the new French military attache, finds himself in a crossroads of prewar intrigue, as the French, Germans, Poles, and Russians jockey for position, spying on one another and trying to discern, most of all, Germany's intentions.

Mercier, a limping World War One veteran still dashing enough to play tennis with a princess, worries not only ... Read More

This is an outstanding and thoroughly entertaining history of American politics and culture (and how they intertwine) between 1964 - 1972. He details how Nixon succeeded as a politician because he learned lessons early on how to exploit people's fears for his gain. The main premise is that this strategy created the primary ideological divide--think liberal vs. conservative or blue vs. red--that exists in American today. Final paragraph: "How does Nixonland end? It has not ended yet." Even though this premise doesn't always hold up, I still cannot recommend this book highly enough.
