Big deal.. Ibn Warraq releases another anti-Islam book. He is not a scholar of any sorts and his viewpoints are not analyzed academically, which is why I think it resonates well with those who are ignorant on the issue. I have read his work before and think that, if you want to Islam-bash, he'll be more than glad to take your money and offer you the work of a third-class hack.

I've sent this book to several friends. If they're not buying the war on terror from the American right, maybe they'll listen to a gay guy. Bawer moved to Europe, enamored by "a world that had moved beyond bigotry," where "people's sense of identity and self-worth didn't depend on jobs or salaries," and folks "are appreciative of and satisfied with everyday pleasures." Perhaps after reading Steyn's "America Alone", I just wasn't ready for another book that gave so many examples of cases where Islamists threaten the West. It is rather hard to argue with the basic premise that there are real things we need to be concerned about when we give Islamists room to spread their hate. On the other hand, there is also a danger of overstating the case to the point that we lose sight of the reality that the vast majority of Muslims are just as appalled by these Islamists and their theology as we are. The author does not take a look at any counterevidence to the premise she puts forward, and I think the book suffers for it.

I enjoyed this book enormously. It was very insightful. It certainly changes our misconceptions regarding history and how things are connected. Although it is something that people are not used to hearing, it is necessary read, and has evidence to back up its claim. With the war on terror showing no signs of abating and as the terrorists strike all who are not in accord with their cause, this book not only provide an insight into the problem from a historical point of view, it also shows how easily Islam's distortion came about. This book changes many misconceptions. The idea of jihad is the center of it all, something that ought to be criticized or rejected for the world to be at peace.
