Here, Harris responds to the thousands of mostly indignant letters he got for writing "The End of Faith". We might assume he is attacking a stereotype of Christianity, as a fanatically intolerant relic of the Dark Ages. But it seems these Christian letter writers really did convince him, quoting chapter and verse, that their religion stands for bigotry. To me, Harris's letter sounds roughly like an argument between two Americans, one a critical thinker, and the other some kind of super-patriot who actually insists that everything said or done in American history has been God's will, because America is God's country. Hitchens just doesn't plan on going to heaven. Formerly many people who were religious basically held there was no heaven, either there was no afterlife or it was pretty bleak for all. Hegel, of course, founded a religious cult where this world is holistically negated so as to better serve the Absolute and the few who know and do the bidding of the Absolute. As a Trotskyist Hitchens was under the sway of the Absolute (the communist utopia being the historical goal of the Absolute in Marxism) and Hitchens still is as a neo-con. Often bracketed with "The God Delusion", this is a better book, though fuzzy, loosely argued and (I'm guessing) hastily written. At least Harris is intelligent and open-minded enough to see the rationale of Buddhist spiritual practice: one more intuitive leap and he might understand what religion, the Sacred, has meant to the majority of the human race. Shame he wastes so much space on fashionable but silly anti-Muslim tirades. The reader should try going through and replacing the word "Muslim" with "Jew", and "Islam" with "Judaism", and see if it still looks acceptable, or even printable. Yet the Hebrew Bible contains at least as many exhortations to violence as the Qur`an; and Jews were "terrorists" too until they achieved their political objectives (anyone remember?) Stenger proves nothing. In fact he offers this take on Leibnitz' questions, "Why is there something, rather than nothing"? Stenger's answer is that "Nothing is unstable". Since physical science is basically inductive and relies on observation and experiment, this is NOTHING more than a guess since it can never be verified. How is this any better than, "God did it". Stenger also quotes physicist Steven Weinberg, " With or without religion people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion." The first thing I will say about The Selfish Gene (TSG) is that it is not the first book on evolution you should read although as a Dawkins book it is not a bad choice but for those unfamiliar with both, then I would suggest Climbing Mount Improbable or The Blind Watchmaker first. Both of those books by Dawkins have a much broader, more generalized, look at natural selection and evolution. TSG is an entirely different type of book because it is particularly academic and a very complex read on specific lines of reasoning that are even aimed at correcting the misconceptions of big name professional biologists. It assumes that the reader will be somewhat acquainted with Darwinism and evolution. If you are not then I would strongly urge that you pass on TSG until you do. If one were open-minded or an aspiring Free Thinker, this book will be read and cherished for a long time, almost to the level of Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion" or Sam Harris' "Letter to a Christian Nation". Whereas "The God Delusion" is from a strictly speaking scientific point of view and rebutts the arguments for God's existence and details the evil wraught on humanity throughout history, this book has a larger focus on countering the ridiculous claims of Creationism, and specifically the Intelligent Design Movement. To a person who prefers evidence over belief, this book is an excellent companion for your thought. While it won't budge those fundamentalists (since you can't change a belief when its not based on evidence), for people who still cling to or follow a religion only loosely, and more of a product of their environment and American ... So much of this book is moving, personal and witty. It includes a brilliant article by Michael Shermer www.michaelshermer.com about how God made it look like evolution happened in such a convincing way to test our faith. Daniel Dennett wrote about how an accident left him close to death (obviously, he recovered, thanks to a caring medical staff) and what this says about human goodness. Old and unexpected writers, such as Mark Twain and Omar Khayyam, are fascinating reading. These present facets of atheism that many of us wouldn't have thought of. If you think Hitch et al present a "straw man" view of religion that is childish, irrational and counterproductive, do some research and you'll see that a lot of people in the U.S. do believe this way.
