: Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of How the Wildest Man in Congress and a Rogue CIA Agent Changed the History of Our Times
This is without a doubt the best non-fiction book I have ever read. The plot, the characters and the writing were all brilliant. A truly exhilirating thrill ride. I couldn't put the book down - in fact, I missed my bus stop reading the book.

When I finished, I felt that I had lost my close friends, and that my life had just gotten a little less exciting.

If you want a thrilling, titilating, over-the top book that never lets up in terms of entertainment, than this is the book for you.

If there were six, seven or even eight stars, I would award those to this book too.

In a word - Awesome!

: The Bin Ladens: An Arabian Family in the American Century
I started reading this book mainly because the author is a pulz prize winner. I started it back in April. Mind you I am a slow reader but this is one that I can't put down. I remember after 9/11 hearing that the Bin Laden family had been flown out the next day or so by Bush. But I didn't know anything about them. Except they were allowed to fly but I was stuck in Essen Germany (one of the pilots has lived there w/ his girlfriend). This book is drenched in so much information that Steve gathered. I cannot imagine how hard or frustrating it must have been to get people there to talk. I have been taking my time and absorbing it (and even highlighting names...like James Baker). I had no idea and I don't think most American's how intertwined the Bin Laden family is with the U.S. They own so many properties ... Read More

I once asked a professor what he thought about DeLillo's book Falling Man, and his response was that, "It just isn't what America needs right now."

At the time, I remember being exasperated by such a political response from a professor of liberal arts, but after reading this book, I can see what he meant. The Looming Tower is what America needs right now.

What struck me first when I opened it was how quickly I was able to read through it. Non-fiction books are often daunting, boring, heavy-handed, or badly written, but this book is proof that those don't have to be flaws of the genre.

Take a look in the back of the book at the number of books Wright went through in research, and how many people he interviewed, and you'll get a feel for why this book feels so real. Every ... Read More

After watching an interview with Gary Shroen on FOX TV, I knew this was going to be an interesting read. It is a very good description of the CIA spearhead into the war against Osama Bin Laden. "First In" leaves the reader with an understanding of how the CIA works and doesn't work. The government beauracracy into the operation is unbelievable at times. The reader must read "Jawbreaker" also to get a better understanding of the mission. Both books give a picture of the tribal factions in that part of the world an why this war is different.

This book is a must read for anyone that wants to know why something like 9-11 happened and why it will happen again. The inner workings of the CIA are laid bare for us to see. You will be proud and horrified all at the same time. Mr. Baer writes a very enjoyable narrative and fills this book with information that makes you feel like you are eavesdropping on the seventh floor. Read this and then go get his other books. They are worth any price.

: Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia
The interest in a book about the Taliban is obvious, and Ahmed Rashid brings certain undeniable strengths to the subject: he is a Pakistani journalist who has travelled extensively throughout Southeast Asia and conducted many interviews which make this a truly unique and indispensable book. I am not aware of any other history with the same access to sources that Rashid enjoys.

But the execution of the book is poor. First (and this isn't Rashid's fault), it is badly out-dated. It was published before the Taliban assassinated Ahmed Shah Massoud (which probably would have changed many of his predictions), before 9/11, and before the U.S.-led coalition invaded.

Second, the organization is odd, and the book gets tedious as a result. The first third is a military-political history of the Taliban from ... Read More

Well having an interest history and how we held the soviets back I bought the book and audio cd of Legacy OF Ashes.
I though listened and read carefully and after taking in the entire book I am left with a bad taste.....the book really gives very little positive's to the fellows who really had little or no idea how to be spys etc. other than the fact that they were brave enough to give it go!

The book really attacks them all as being fools who couldn't shoot straight and so on and frankly that is not correct.

My suggestion would be to read some of the other books out there on the CIA and really see how hard it was to foil the soviets as they were brutal and vilolent and we as Americans really didnt know how to deal with what we know now and they new then as EVIL!!!!

This is a very interesting book for anyone who wants to understand the current situation in Afghanistan. A review of the military history of the country that gives important clues to understand the present. Getting deep into the history of this country reveals that all the conflicts fought in Afghanistanthe throught history share basic cahracteristics that must be understood to avoid errors in the current conflict.

I was quite enthused to get this book. I'm very interested in the CIA and covert ops as well as the history of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, this book was a dissapointment in several ways. First of all, what I was most interested in learning more about was the abysmal decision to let bin Laden escape at Tora Bora. Who made the decision and why? Unfortunately the author spends only a few pages on that question. (To be fair a significant part of the discussion is blacked out). Also, I found the tone of the book to be very self serving. Mr. Bernsten presents himself as some kind of CIA superhero. He never makes a mistake, gets scared, and can go for days without sleep. At the same time he is constantly being let down by mindless cowardly bureacrats back home. However, even with those critiques I have to admit the book was a page turner, ... Read More
