: The Porcelain God: A Social History of the Toilet
I bought the book thinking I could use it as the basis for a lecture in my history classes. The book is replete with factual errors. The worst error within the first 20 pages: "The Romans found competition for England from the Vikings. ... By 71 AD York, north of London, boasted a large population of Vikings." (pp. 19-20) There were no Vikings in the 1st century AD, thank you. And by the time the Vikings reached the British Isles in the late 8th century, there certainly were no Romans to compete with them. There are many other mistakes in this book.

I could have forgiven some factual errors (although placing the Vikings in England in the 1st century is difficult since this is very basic information taught in western civ and world history classes. I remind the reader that the ... Read More

Quite an interesting history of Western ideas of hygiene from the Roman Empire through the present day. I was a bit surprised that the book focused primarily on Europe, with a short description of the US in the late 19th and 20th centuries. There was no mention of other cultures/regions of the world.

I found this book in my building's basement about three years back. It was in good condition so I picked it up. I thought it would make a fair complementary read to The Encyclopedia of New York City by Ken T. Jackson from the New York Historical Society.

The fact that I completely read GOTHAM in one sitting (OK, I actually slept a few hours on that Saturday night) is just to tell you how a well written history book can become a real page turner.

Today in the The Wall Street Journal [1-year subscription], GOTHAM takes the Number One spot in their "Five Best" feature on page W10: this title is now a real classic of American history!

History is not just about great men and wars; as this book astutely illustrates, it's also about the daily lives of the majority of the people. Dealing with the time period 1790-1840, a pre-industrialized era for the most part, Jack Larkin examines what life was like for most Americans at that time. Housing, occupations, entertainments, and family life are described; what it was like to travel, what happened when one got sick, the life of children, and how holidays were celebrated are also dealt with. Somewhat unique for a book like this, a long chapter concerns itself with the "private" lives of people: dating, marriage, sexual relations, pregnancies and child bearing, the role of the privy and chamber pot all get their due. Larkin's book is a compendium of facts and information regarding everyday life, ... Read More

I found this book to be extremely information about life in the 1860s as I am into Civil War Re-enacting. There were so many interesting facts of everyday life, etc. that it was as if I had been transported back nearly 150 years.

Of course, there is some good information that will help a lot, if you put it into practice. But as another reviewer said, there's too much funk.

I don't think this book was written, necessarily for a certain age group or demographic. It seems to have been written for a certain personality, like those that still read old issues of Mad Magazine.

Once again, there's content here that could be helpful. But as for the presentation, "To each his own said the farmer as he kissed the cow."
