This book has the original fairy tales, and they are amazing. If you want something completely different from the clean cut Disney versions of the classics you should at least read the book.

It probably sounds almost like a cliche, but I still must say it--Anne Sexton takes a new spun perspective on the classic Grimm fairy tales. She has a "theme" which she feels is appropriate for each story. Then, she fills in the blank of what elements and details seem to be missing in the fairy tales. The flat and static characters such as Mother Gothel now become a more complex character. In this cynical and dense poems, Sexton makes it seem as if her stories are the untold truth of the fairy tales.

Jack Zipes has brought together a comprehensive collection of fairy tales that surprises the reader with how insightful and timeless these tales are in regards to the human condition. Many of these tales, which are not found in more polite and juvenile collections, still have the power to enchant the imagination.

To declare a bias right off, I read the critical reviews and was slightly put off by the summaries which seemed to regard the story as some sort of allegory of the archetypal feminine journey to learn to live in the scary world of men.

But nevertheless, I bought it anyway, and read it over the course of an afternoon. Then I read it again. Then I read it again another three times, and tonight I'm going to start reading it a sixth time.

To put my cards on the table, if there *is* a feminine allegory in here, then I can only vaguely feel it, in the manner of someone feeling their way around a dark room. I can guess that the shapes of it are there, but feminine allegories tend to pass straight over my head as something I simply don't understand or even notice. Instead, I found ... Read More

On a scale of 1-10, 10 being the highest rating I could give, I rate this book a 7. It's hard to stay with. The writing is not bad, but the approach is cynical. Actually, it gives me a feeling that the author does not really like females, and is taking out his aggression on the fair sex by these writings. I could do without being so much in the prince's "head", or the evil fairy's "head" - especially before bedtime. Nobody wants a rotting princess full of worms, either. What ever happened to the other fairies? They aren't here. I can't read this book before I go to sleep. It's not a soothing experience. It's dark; but some people like that kind of thing. I don't find it to be an erotic book in any sense of the word - it is more aggressive than feeling. In fact? the prince does everything short of squatting ... Read More

6.Nights at the Circus by: Angela Carter

 : Nights at the Circus
I found the narrative style in this work to be a bit like wading through thick mud -- wishing the character would just "get to the point!" It took me months to get three quarters of the way through the book and then I finally gave up. Perhaps I just wasn't in the right frame of mind when I began reading it. Nights at the Circus isn't a bad book -- I know it's one of those "like it or hate it" novels -- I'm certain under the right circumstances it is probably quite fascinating. Who knows, maybe someday I'll pick it up and try again.

is it silly for an adult to thoroughly enjoy this book??

'cause i did.

and i've a feeling that a decade from now, i'd still find this surprisingly wonderful.

though the author did not belabor the fantastical world Haroun found himself embroiled in with thick imagery and endless descriptions that in some books become tiresome, there nevertheless was a peculiarly believable aspect in the realm of the Sea of Stories. what i also immensely loved about rushdie's narration was that, in the case of our young hero, there were no long-winded ruminations of the self, no drawn-out complications on what is exactly good and evil, and perhaps best of all, no lingering soppy accounts of events after their happy ending. everything was told, in relation to the story, in a fast-paced and very matter ... I must say that I find this work hard to properly describe in terms of how I feel about it. I think that it was a fascinating look at one man's experience in the Holocaust, but an equally important aspect is Art's interaction with his father during their conversations. This seems like an honest portrayal, especially since Art isn't afraid to include things that may make himself or his father look bad (he isn't always the most sympathetic son, at times a narrow-minded father). I think connecting the story of what happened then, and how it's effects are apparent for the rest of a person's life (although different people reacted in different ways) is interesting. The way this is written is especially effective, because it truly feels like Vladek is telling you his story first hand.
As for the artwork, although it isn't my favorite ... Read More

This small book provides a wonderfully insightful perspective on the issues surrounding compassion and respect for animals. It reviews some of the main arguments, but in the context of two lectures given by an aging academician. Adding to the substance of her lectures is the curious passive nature of her son's response, who seems to miss the point, while mainly experiencing a sense of discomfort and embarrassment at the actions of his mother. This is very readable and is intelligently written.

: The Uses of Enchantment (Penguin Psychology)

Bruno Bettleheim again becomes the fount of great sanity and wisdom. In this seemingly innocent book, on the same statue as Joseph Cambell's "The Hero with a Thousand Faces," or Ernest Becker's "Denial of Death" and his "Birth and Death of Meaning," or indeed even Freud's "Civilization's and its Discontents," this giant of our era, lays out a map of how we think using the morality of Fairy Tales as his raw material and as a springboard to the real subtext of the book which is: How man is to deal with his own problems of existence.

What he tells us is basically this: that for all peoples of all races, the primary problem of life is developing smoothly into adulthood and overcoming the inherent psychological debilities of youth and immaturity -- namely overcoming narcissistic disappoints, unearned entitlements, self-doubts, ...
