Powerful collection of advice and insight that doesn't follow any single line of religious dogma, but instead borrows from all of them to create a universal code of higher wisdom. This is one of those books (like Napoleon Hill's Positive Action Plan: 365 Meditations For Making Each Day a Success) that I will never finish reading -- I'll read it for the rest of my life.

This book does not necessarily contain any "answers", apart from the author's own personal revelations. What it DID do, for me, was to plant a seed. While I didn't agree with all of the religious content, I did appreciate the undertaking of a spiritual journey. This book opened my eyes to the incredible value of the self-discovery that comes from making such a trek. Two years after my first reading, I followed in the footsteps of Paulo Coelho and so many millions of other pilgrims, and made the same journey myself! This is not a book about the Camino de Santiago, as much as it is a story about the power and importance of self-discovery. One thing you will hear over and over is that once you pick up one book by Coelho, you end up reading them all. I, like so many, started with the Alchemist and was just blown away. I approached this book, as I do all of Coelho's creations, with anticipation and VERY high expectations. Anyone capable of the writing the Alchemist has the potential for great things. My anticipation was justified by this poignant, and very touching book. This is Coelho at his best. An intensely personal tale that must be read and lived

This is my second book by Paulo Coelho. I first read the Alchemist and I bought this book before I realized it was the same author. Based on reading these two books, I have to say that this guy writes as though his audience is young adults. The writing is flat and simplistic. If you like reading YA books, then you might like this. Otherwise, don't bother.

This is the first novel I decided to read by Paulo Coelho. Yes, the title is very blunt, quite literal, and perhaps a bit pretentious to a jaded generation who consider such things as "cool". However, the text itself is turely far from pretension. Infact, it's quite modest and dealing with such a subject as suicide and mental institutions, the story becomes simple,honest, and life affirming. In the first page of Coelho's novel, Veronika decides to die (no pun intended). Her attempt, though, fails, and she awakes in a mental institution where she is told by the head doctor, Dr. Igor, that in her attempted suicide, she had in fact had done serious damage to her body, her heart to be exact, succumbing her to eventual death. The writing of Paulo Coehelo inspires one to introspection. Although `The Fifth Mountain' could be digested quickly, I recommend a slower reading. The publisher obliges by cleverly placing bullets throughout the text, allowing one to pause at appropriate moments for reflection. Despite the trials and tribulations, we must struggle onward to achieve our life's destiny.

There are some great insights into the human condition, much like in The Alchemist, but this story is bizarre to the point where its bizarreness detracts from the message being conveyed. In The Alchemist the storyline served as a vehicle to convey deeper human truths, and these truths were the point of the book. In The Valkyries, the storyline itself seemed like the point. It seemed like Coelho wanted the world to know the weird magic/drugs/psychedelic jaunts he's been on; it's 187 pages ripped out of his personal journal with no real point. The deeper human truths felt like a literary afterthought. If you haven't read The Alchemist, read that first. This book would have spoiled me on the author. I'd give it a pass.

I stumbled on Paulo Coelho purely by accident. Overcast day in a used bookstore, and I find Veronika Decides to Die. After that I was captivated by Coelho's writing style and wonderful sense of finding one's spiritual way. The Devil and Miss Prym wasn't anything like I expected, but none of his stories are. The characters are wonderfully created in loving detail, the storyline has so many ways it could turn so that the reader is left really wondering what will happen next, trusting that Coelho will lead us to a place where the injustices of humanity begin to make sense again.
