: The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
If you work in marketing, like me, you know that traction for a brand is critical and good products have tipping points en route to skyrocketing sales. Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point is a fascinating exploration of makes ideas explode. His anecdotes and research are fascinating, and some of his exploration focuses directly on consumer products, such as the resurgence of Hush Puppies.

Whether you are a newly college grad, a cashier from Wal-Mart or you just got laid off by CitiGroup, take some time and read this book. It will give you a brand new perspective of how companies run their business today; it will probably make you realized how incompetent you actually are in a flat world. But at least you will finally be able to have a intellectual talk with your friends while you are in a bar.

In "The World Is Flat", Friedman talks about how he realized that the world is actually flat on a trip to Bangalore, India. From the fall of Berlin Wall to the raise of search engine and personal digital devices, Friedman explains how each major events and inventions from the nineties to the twenty-first century contributed to the flattening of the world. Friedman also talks about ... Read More

I found this a tremendously interesting read: during two days or so it took me to read it, I really couldn't put it down. (A teacher, I put my students to work doing a bunch of soul-crushing busy work so I could finish reading it during classtime.)

It's full of great anecdotes, and Gladwell has a lucid and engaging style.

The problem is this: as far as what Gladwell's actually saying, his observations don't sum to much.

The basic thesis -- as I'm sure you know -- is that people in certain walks of life are frequently found to exhibit eerily reliable snap judgments, whereby they can arrive at the core of (what seem to us) monstrously complex problems in only a second or two.

Fair enough. The phenomenon certainly exists. Gladwell documents it well ... Read More

After reading this book and then noticing some of the negative reviews, I was perplexed as to why. So I clicked on the lower reviews and noticed a common theme; they're all upset about Whyte's attempt to diminish Christianity and religion as a whole. So for readers who are very sensitive about religion, I would not recommend this book. But if you can see past the religious aspect and into some of the more meaningful arguments Whyte presents, this book is superb. And as to whether or not Whyte succeeds in discrediting religion, I'll let you be the one to determine that. I just hope you aren't convinced by some of these hocus-pocus reviews because most of the information in this book is critical to the average person.

This book is extremely interesting and a quick read. I couldn't put it down. I do not have an economics or business background but I found the topic of behavioral economics to be very interesting.

The first chapter had me hooked with the Coke/Berlin Wall story. If you are looking for a balanced book on economics for newbies, without the math, than this is the book for you. The author does a good job explaining his point of view and usually succeeds at being balanced. I am half way through the book and have no complaints so far.

I read this for a MBA class. Out of the stack of books assigned, so far, this is the only one I liked. It is relevant to today's curious questions of how to get crowds engaged, how crowds behave, and why we even care.

I'm trying to teach people to work collaboratively together at work. They "think" they already are doing this but the author gives me new ideas on how to further their participation in team work. I find that in corporate america, people contribute mostly in their assigned role. "I am a business analyst so I don't give my 2 cents when solutioning". Yikes it drives me crazy that they put their single hats on then multi-task when we start talking about something that isn't their specialty.

Anyway, I underlined something on every other page which is a sign that I ... Read More

Quirky and very small (67 pages in a pocket-sized hardback format), this purports to be an academic consideration of the meaning of the titular word. And in fact it does give serious thought to the distinction between lying and BS-ing.

Intriguing is the best review I can think of for this book, which is easily read in one hour, although it might bear repeated reference during the course of a typical work day amongst those who might attempt to accomplish their purposes using this technique!

This book kind of over billed itself, with the marketers adding "why the rich are rich, the poor are poor and why you can't find a good deal on a used car." This book doesn't read like Freakanomics, Blink or Tipping Point, unfortunately, because the author does have a lot of good things to say and does do a good job of explaining economic terms and theories in laymen's terms.

I'd recommend this book to anyone that is interested in a better understanding of economics and demystifying some of the jargon and terms used on news broadcasts and in newsprint. There are often people of all strips talking about demand, supply, cost, profit and other things that they know little about or sometimes, worse, think they know something but in reality have an understanding that is completely backwards.

The gimmick in the TV show Numbers--and all crime shows have to have some sort of gimmick--is that a genius mathematician is able to help the FBI solve crimes. He particularly does so by finding patterns amongst the haze of large data sets. Ian Ayres's book Super Crunchers is a non-fiction look at a similar idea: the trend to find patterns and make predictions from analysis of large amounts of data.

The two principal ways that this is done--outlined in the first two chapters--is through regression and randomized trials. Simply put, regression sees how things have performed in the past and tries to extrapolate into the future; it's like plotting points in a graph and finding the best line or curve that fits that line. With randomized trials, you take a random sample from a population and see how these sample members ... Read More
