This was my first (Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James) novel. I thought it was very well written and had an interesting plot. Jemma and Duncan make a very likeable team, and they are surrounded by interesting family and friends. While I certainly had questions about some of the relationships, I felt this book could definitely stand on its own. It made me want to go out and read the books at the beginning of the series. I read a lot of mystery's, and I liked the fact that this story was to the point. Sometimes you get an extra 50 pages or more which are not necessary to the story line. Some of the book flashes between the past and the present of one of the central characters. Debra Crombie does this in an accomplished manner, as we are witness to a truly hateful time in history.

It had been some time since I'd read a Ruth Rendell or a Barbara Vine (she is so prolific I get mixed up - which have I read yet and which haven't I)? I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan to go back now and catch up with a few books I know I've missed.

This book was all the more enjoyable to me because the much-ballyhooed book I'd brought with me to read on vacation in the Netherlands was a huge disappointment...overwritten and boring. So I was forced to scour the English-language shelves of the local stores where I found Not in the Flesh. So glad I did. May Ms. Rendell continue to entertain us with her writing for a few more decades.

Sandford has his hero, Lucas Davenport, currently of the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, musing early that life is just chaotic, happenings that save, or take, lives. Weather, his wife and a medical doctor, believes in cause-and-effect. After a bloodily murderous story, Davenport convincingly restates his position, but in fact Sandford, the author, belies it by crafting a scintillating book that blinds one to the incredibly finely ordered plot lines.
This is a jewel of a book. It contains so artfully crafted a plot and set of characters you only see all the facets after the last chapter, looking back in awe at the smooth and so deceptive flow of words. There are Goths, domestics, big and little drug dealers, snitches, farmers, little old ladies, b---hy ladies, stage and sex actors, ghosts, webmasters, ... Read More

Peter Robinson's latest book picks up where his last ("Piece of My Heart") left off. Following Detective Alan Banks, Robinson takes us through another murder mystery in the Dales of England's Yorkshire. As in previous Banks' mysteries, this book delves into the lives of the main characters, as well as solving another dark mystery. Robinson writes well enough, that it's not necessary to have read the previous books, but it is definately an advantage, as his character's lives are so intertwined.
One of the things I like about Robinson's books, is his ability to tell more than one story, at a time, and weave them into one cohesive plot. This story involves characters from a previous mystery, yet it's not imperative that the reader be familiar with that book. I do think, however, that most readers, of this ... Read More

5.Buckingham Palace Gardens: A Novel (Charlotte & Thomas Pitt Novels) by: Anne Perry

A fun mystery with an interesting, unpredictable story line. This is a fine example of Anne Perry's work and one of her better ones at that. It moves along revealing more and more of the characters inner natures without being dull. The use of the similar crime style to other "famous and notorious" crimes in the era made me wonder if she had solved the Jack the Ripper cases once and for all. I did miss Charlotte and Emily, but they don't have to be in every story, do they?

Let me preface this by admitting that I am a huge fan of these novels. The characters are very human but still interesting. This novel is both disquieting and fascinating, particularly in light of current events and troubles in Italy. I think this is one of the better and heart-wrenching novels in this series.

I know a lot of people gave Fearless Fourteen a bad review, but I thought it was just great! Another fun installment in the life of Stephanie Plum and her crazy friends. I love all of the Plum series and am currently in the process of reading the series again. I can't wait until June for #15...luckily I'll get my Evanovich fix in January with the arrival of Plum Spooky.

I'm a Reacher fan, but this is a reach too far. There's supposed to be some military checkpoint on a public highway that just gets ignored, and some town where everyone knows what's going on but word never gets out...
Ignore for a second the anti-Iraq propaganda. The scale is simply too large to be believable. This is a comic book, not a thriller. Two stars is is probably generous, but I like the hero and the action.

This is one of the best books I have read this year!
The suspense and thrill ride Deaver provides is like none other.
The plot is fascinating and informative. The characters well developed, interesting and intriguing. This is the 8th Rhyme and Sachs novel Deaver has written and everything: plot, characters and writing are as fresh as ever.
Fantastic Read! Enjoy!

I've always thought that "A Superior Death," an earlier entry in Nevada Barr's always-fabulous series about park ranger Anna Pigeon, was one of the very best. It was also almost too scary to read. So I started "Winter Study" with a bit of trepidation: What would happen to Anna now?

Plenty. We find Anna older and a lot crankier, stuck in a park in the snowy tundra near Lake Superior where the only happy campers are the wolves and the moose. Anna is part of a team that includes several wolf researchers and other experts, and a smarmy Homeland Security agent; why he is there is more than needs explaining in this review.

Soon enough, scary and desperate things start to happen, from the possible sighting of a mythical half dog-half wolf of gargantuan and unworldly proportions, to the disapperance of a young researcher ... Read More
