This is the absolute first book that my daughter would sit still for. And now we've read it a million times or so. :o) The illustrations are vivid and funny, and my daughter really enjoys counting the four chickens on each set of pages. It's also great for having your toddler point out various items pictured.

Banks, Kate. Max's Dragon. Pictures by Boris Kulikov. Farrar, Straus and Giroux. 2008.

Max likes to make up rhymes and he has a rich imagination. He skips out to where his two brothers are playing croquet, and says, "Found, ground". "What are you doing?" asks his brother Karl. "I'm looking for words that rhyme", says Max. Then he finds an umbrella decorated with a dragon. When a croquet ball makes a trail in the grass, Max follows, telling his brothers that his "dragon's tail has made a trail" and he is "following it". Max lies down in the grass and looks up at the clouds; he tells his brothers that his dragon is practicing flying. Max's brothers join in the play. His brother Ben characterizes a dark cloud as a dinosaur, and Karl says, "It's going after your dragon!" It begins ... Read More

Caldecott Medal winning author Eve Bunting is a natural born storyteller. Whether or not her birth in Ireland has anything to do with that is immaterial as to date she has penned over 200 books for young readers. Many parents today may well remember having Bunting's books in their libraries as children and eagerly buy them for their own youngsters. Here's one more to enchant young eyes and ears.

The author might well have titled this story The Traveling Turtle because this small reptile lives in a pen in Emma's backyard yet he longs to see the world. He's very fond of Emma as she visits him often, rubs his head, and brings him treats.

However, the tales she has read to him about faraway places - India, Africa - have whetted his appetite to see for ... Read More

My daughter received this book for her fifth birthday. We knew that we were in for an adventure when we saw the bitten cover. Now she and my two-year old ask me to read it to them daily. Loveable Winston has altered our whole library experience; my girls seem to look more closely at our local librarians. As my five-year old said, "I hope that our librarian is really Winston, especially since he only eats words." Winston's passion for reading is infectious. I highly recommend this well-written and beautifully illustrated book.

 : Big Chickens
The big Chickens are afraid of everything. And whenever they voice their fears, it seems that is exactly what happens to them. These big chickens go on an adventure outside the farmyard fueled by fear of the predator that might get them in the henhouse. Its a cause and effect sort of story, the chickens see the peril in front of them and say I don't want to do that because this, this, and this could happen. And when they go forward, that, that and that happens.

We laughed at the pictures, which were very clever in portraying the plight of the chickens.

At the end the biggest chickens around are so proud of their chicken-ness. It is a funny read.

I read this book to my class of first graders and they really loved it. We read it during character ed and talked about how some of the characters did not use self-control. The illustrations are gorgeous. I was a little worried about how the kids would react to the main character being a cockroach, but they just thought it was funny. I bought it because it was a Pura Belpré Medal award winner and I'm trying to have more multicultural books in the classroom.

I have purchased both of Leslie Helakoski's books. I have found each to be a delightful children's story with a clever message tucked lovingly between the pages. She is truly gifted in her efforts to "teach" children through the art of story - as so often our efforts as teacher/parents, etc. get filtered out.

Each book offers the child the opportunity to read and discover something about themself (i.e. courage..."The Big Chickens" or a fun with mathematics "The Smushy Bus"). But her books also allow the delicious opportunity to share the reading within the intimacy of parent-child, teacher-student, sibling-sibling and enjoy the noticing of each clever phrase, each well-chosen word to more fully take in the entire experience of her books.

Much applause to Ms. Helakoski for ... Read More
