This is an excellent entry in the Inspector Lynley series, full of interesting and surprising twists, with a gripping story. Ms. George, as usual, deals with very deep currents of human psychology and is quite thoughtful about the society she depicts. The book, however, it is a bit verbose for this reader's taste, which is why it garners only four starts. But then, again, sometimes there is nothing better than sitting down with a long book one knows one will enjoy.

....metaphorically speaking.

This is a first for George. As with all of her stories featuring Thomas Lynley there is a crime which must be solved, but in this case the crime is really incidental to the main thrust of the story, which is Lynley's journey (both physically and emotionally speaking) from the day his wife and unborn child were gunned down in a senseless street shooting, as detailed in George's previous two novels.

When we first meet Lynley in this story he has retreated into himself. He has started an aimless walk along the paths and trails of the Cornwall coast; he doesn't know where he's going and he really doesn't care - when Helen died a great deal of his soul died with her. But then, along one of those trails, he discovers a body - and his police ... Read More

I gather from reading other reviews that Playing For the Ashes is typical of Elizabeth George's work, i.e. it features lengthy (and I mean really lengthy) digressions involving characters who may or may not end up being important in the end. George appears to have an excellent ear for British English. She does what she does very well, but if you prefer a fairly straightforward police procedural, you probably won't enjoy this.

yet somehow Elizabeth George kept me reading. Still, I didn't find the book ultimately satisfying. The motive, when revealed, for one of the murders was simply not believable. Less of the cumbersome super-self-conscious "English" usage, but still more detailed description of furniture and such than is to my taste.

I listened to the unabridged audiobook of this story narrated by Davina Porter who was excellent. After starting the Lynley/Havers series backwards with "No One As Witness" (didn't know it was a series) I got a list of titles and began with the first story. Liked Lynley and the other characters from the start but had mixed feelings about Sgt. Barbara Havers. She was a bit overbearing when first introduced and her pairing with Lynley seemed a bit strange but it worked. Their work relationship has grown throughout the series and they are now a great team. Funny as heck at times too! However, Barbara still was a bit annoying at times. In this story, she really comes across as a courageous, heroic and dedicated professional and I was rooting for her all the way. If this had been a movie, I would have ... Read More

It had been a while since I had read an Elizabeth George book, but picked right up again with her distinctive writing style. This book focused on Simon St. James, the crippled forensic scientist, and his much-young wife Deborah, as they investigated the murder of an elderly Jewish mogul on the island of Guernsey.

I had no idea of the unique history of the island of Guernsey and that it was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. George did a great job of incorporating this history organically into the story. The mystery was complex and engrossing, and the characters endearing and compelling. This book is a real page-turner!

On the down side, the hyperemotionalism of George's characters had left me weary in the past, and did again with this outing. Aren't these people supposed ... Read More

The 9th book in the series, this book features Barbara Havers doing some investigation independent from Thomas Lynley.

While Barbara has had some time off from the "routine" of police work, she has become friends with the daughter of her new Pakistani neighbor. Soon her neighbors are off to the seaside on vacation mixed with family business. Shortly, Barbara learns that the business is murder. Barbara goes to the coast where she is asked by her old "mate", the head of police in the small seaside town, to help solve the murder, she finds that there are subtle undercurrents pulling the investigation in different directions. Was the murder motivated by love, jealousy, resentment, greed?

I found this book intriguing, complex and challenging. Although I prefer reading Elizabeth George's books ... Read More

I've read this book twice; when it first came out, and again this summer. Of course, the second time around I knew who the killer was, and remembered most of the plot, however, I do so enjoy George's earlier work that I've started re-reading her.
I've recommended, and will continue to recommend Elizabeth George's earlier work to anyone who likes a good suspence mystery or just an interesting, well-written read.
I've read them in order, but they don't need to be - she fills you in on what you may have missed, but does it in a way that makes you want to read a previous book in the series, in case you missed one.

This is the fourth in the "Inspector Lynley Mystery" series, but it does not pick up where the previous novel left off. It is set a few years earlier in time, and gives us some of the back story of Thomas Lynley, Earl of Asherton, and some of the people closest to him: Simon St. James, Deborah Cotter, and Lady Helen Clyde. All of them--and some important relatives--are together at Lynley's Cornwall estate when a local man is found murdered, and soon thereafter one of Lynley's house guests is found dead under ambiguous circumstances. Although the local police have jurisdiction, Lynley and St. James become involved, not in their official capacities but in effect as private detectives, as people close to both of them become prime suspects. Although the crimes are eventually solved, the main emphasis in this book ... Read More

This book of 560 pages is an indulgence on the part of the author -- who must be enchanted with "hearing herself write." We have the pretentious use of the King's English by an American writer who would do well to attend to simple English usage. Can you believe that, on page 1, the phrase, " ... those who imbibed in anything beyond water" got by the copy editor. "Imbibed IN?" ... Does she mean to say "indulged in?" To imbibe means, simply, to drink. But, then, nothing in this book is simple. Reaching the end of the book, I found the multiple sub-plots, each populated with characters whose life-struggles had been detailed ad nauseum, to amount to very little in a denoument that did not justify the investment in reading. What a disappointment !
