41.Kathy Smith - Pilates for Abs starring: Kathy Smith

VHS : Kathy Smith - Pilates for Abs
This is a really good abs workout. It is shorter than SMith's other pilates workout for the lower body. I found that the exercises were harder and I was unable to complete the workout the first time. However, I give this workout four stars because it has some of the same ecercises as the Lower Body workout and it is not as long. I simply felt that Kathy Smith's Pilates for the Lower Body was the better video of the two. This works best when used with that workout.

Overall the video was great. Though the person operating the camera was not that good because in the beginning there are to many close ups and you have a hard time following along. About ten minutes into the video they seem to find another camera person and you can watch all the moves and follow along as well. Though they say this video is for all stages, I mainly think it is for intermediates.

VHS : Hilary Burnett's PILATES INTERMEDIATE
This is a nice change of pace from the more gym-style pilates workouts that currently seem to populate the genre. Hilary sets a nice mood, gives very clear and easy-to-follow directions, and definitely utilizes a more holistic approach. She seems to have put some definite thought and energy into the look and feel of this DVD. The only thing I wish were different about this product is that there was no indication of how long the series is on the outside of the box (it's a little over a half hour). Also, she focuses mainly on core work, does less with buns, thighs, arms, etc. If those are your target areas, you might want to supplement this with another workout. I do think this is a worthwhile video for most anyone, and is a great way to get both relaxed and energized before a busy day at work.

I own a few of Ms. Stotts videos and find them all to be a great source to workout with. She walks you through each step clearly and simply. In this particular video, a handy pop-up screen appears at the appropriate time in the right hand corner, to display modifications to the exercises for your body's abilities. I highly recommend her tapes.

Just as the title promises, this DVD is great for flexibility and stress release. After doing it, I feel calm, de-stressed and as though I have just had a great massage. The music and lovely tropical setting, with ducks and giant butterflies, adds to the soothing atmosphere.

VHS : Stott Pilates - Basic Pilates (formerly: 22-Minute Matwork)
After having had a friend demonstrate a few Pilates moves I was interested enough to buy this video. It is, I believe, the most basic mat video in the Stott Pilates series. I found the instructions clear and easy to follow, and the workout very approachable -- though as a real beginner, I couldn't do all the moves -- after two weeks I'm getting closer AND people are asking if I've lost weight (I haven't) and I take that as a good result. If I were Stott pilates, I wouldn't have put the intimidating equipment moves in the introduction to the tape though -- it almost scared me off. I like the tape enough to have ordered a few more and to be looking for a Pilates studio locally!

I felt Moira Stott gave a really nice lesson and, given the limitations of video, was quite encouraging.

VHS : Keeping Fit in Your 50s - Flexibility
Since I am on the other side of a fatigue-filled menopause, I am now in horrible physical condition and find this DVD perfect for someone in my condition. Every single muscle in my body aches. I have tried all sorts of different yoga DVDs and find them too difficult (at this time) for me. I think it's a good place for me to start.

I also have to say that I don't find them talking to me like I am stupid. I think they are talking to those who have not had much experience with yoga, pilates, and exercise in general, and, last buy not least, the elderly.

The worst thing I can say about this is that that in order to miss all the talk, I have to FF to the right spot. I miss the old VHS tapes, where you could turn it off and start right at the place you want. If there is a way ... Read More
