"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. Definitely one of the best Vietnam war movies out there. It is more about the psychological trama of the Vienam war which I liked. It can seem a little out there from time to time but that's to get the viewer to understand it from the main character's point of view. This is definitely not for the younger kids out there and it is pretty intense. It is a must have for any DVD collection. It is one of those classic movies everyone has to see at least once. The acting is amazing. Just an overall great movie.

Truly an enjoyable WWI movie. The aerial scenes were outstanding (Note: These were borrowed from the 1930 movie by the same name). The casting was on the mark. Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, David Niven and Donald Crisp (Excellent actor) were perfectly cast. Plus, the brief but well acted role of the captured German aviator by Carl Esmond. The pressures and guilt of being a squadron commander and sending friends, colleagues, and inexperienced pilots against overwhelming odds to certain death. Then coping with the aftermath and being blamed and taking blame for their deaths. Being a responsible leader was a difficult and lonely job which leads to coping methods such as heavy drinking to get numb to it. This movie does a remarkable job of showing how courageous the WWI pilots were in going up on a daily basis ... Read More

Great war film I just watched on this silent classics VHS, which at the moment is the only place its available. There's nothing wrong with this release at all, in fact it has a score by the wonderful Carl Davis, the highest sought-after silent film composer. Nice picture, and a great film.

I watch this film every Christmas Season.Odd choice? Well, if you consider that the Season is about "peace,good will to all" then yes.A MIDNIGHT CLEAR is a look at the two small platoons of beleagured soldiers from America and Germany (who make it quite clear that they are not Nazis, and the F%$# Hitler!) who meet quite unexpectedly in the Ardennes Woods in December 1944 in the final year of WW2.The point of the film is to show that War is not all that some glorify it to be.This is a "different" approach to War, much like the recent LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA where human faces and emotions are placed upon both "the home team" and "the enemy." What a glorious, uplifting movie this is. A great cri de coeur against war and hatered, and in favor of tolerance and peace. That the message it presents is, by this point, somewhat of a given does nothing to diminish its importance. You doubtless know of the plot by now. Charlie Chaplin, a man with a moustache suspiciously similar to a certain unpleasant fellow in history, plays the role of an anti-Semetic dictator named Hinkel and a poor Jewish barber. That these two look exactly the same is obvious. That the fact doesn't come in handy until the end is somewhat unexpected, but still great. The movie avoids getting bogged down in all the obvious traps that await a film with content such as this. That said, I must say that what I find most intriguing about the Billy Pilgrim character (Michael Sacks) in SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE is how much of a true pilgrim he is. He is unhitched from time, while simultaneously, due to his own pleasant personality and ever-calm demeanor, Billy is also a traveler through space. He drifts through life as a disengaged observer, like a cork floating down a stream. Billy is a warm, innocent human being who is utterly removed from his own existence! For its time, this was an entertaining comedy with an anti-war message that was loved for its ability to express the feelings of most Americans at the time on the Vietnam War. This is a film about the Korean War only in name but as you will see throughout, the de facto Vietnam theme is prevalent throughout sometimes subtly but even blatantly for instance in the downtown "Korea" scene where the women are all wearing Vietnamese-style conical hats which is not indigenous to Korea. Overall, this comedy doesn't age well for modern viewers although its anti-war message is very clear and resonates even today. Some parts are simply boring and I especially found the whole football scene totally sleep-worthy and I didn't see how it added to the overall theme unless it's a way to show how Americans try to impose their culture on ... This movie was not that good. In the first place, it was excessively voilent. I know this movie takes place during the civil war and it was a voilent time, but I find it particulary unbearable because of several scenes. I also was disgusted by the sexual suggestions and scenes. I couldn't even sit through it, it was so bad. It might have had a good love story, I mean a man forsaking his soldier days and risking his own life by being a deserter to return to the love of his life, that basis was fine. I'm a Civil War romance lover, I don't mind that. However, all the junk crammed in this film made it immpossible to watch.
