VHS : Desperate Journey
Of all the actors of the 40s who made WWII-themed films, Errol Flynn was second only to John Wayne in raising critics' ire for 'winning the war single-handed'. His civilian status was ridiculed, although Flynn HAD in fact, attempted to enlist, but had been rejected (despite his robust appearance, it was discovered he had an 'athlete's heart', plus traces of malaria and TB he had contracted in his youth). Even with the negative press, Flynn's unique status as an Australian who was also an American movie star made him ideal as a morale booster for not only wartime American audiences, but audiences overseas, as well.

"Desperate Journey" was certainly the most incredible of his war films, with it's 'over-the-top' action, and wildly improbable plot (downed fliers reap havoc on moronic ... Read More

The pastor warns Alvin York against his crooked path. Do the wealthy look down on the poor? Alvin makes a down payment on that bottom land. Men go around armed. Alvin works hard to earn the rest of the money. Alvin plans to win the shooting match and win the big prize. Percussion cap muzzle loaders are used. Pastor Pyle counsels Alvin against his anger. VHS : A Guy Named Joe
A GUY NAMED JOE is a wonderful, old-fashioned, patriotic film made in 1944 during WWII. Starring Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, Van Johnson, Ward Bond, and Lionel Barrymore, A GUY NAMED JOE is the story of Pete (Tracy), a hot shot bomber pilot, who dies when he purposefully crashes his disabled plane into a German aircraft carrier. Dorinda (Dunne), Pete's girl friend and a pilot with the Women's Air Ferrying Corps, is devastated, especially since she has just convinced Pete to take a safer assignment stateside teaching new recruits how to fly. In Heaven, which looks remarkably like an Army airfield only with soft, fluffy, white clouds on the ground, "The Commanding General" (Barrymore) makes Pete a guardian angel to Ted Randall (Johnson), a young, unsure Army pilot. Pete invisibly helps Ted through flight ... Read More

8.Revolution (1985) starring: Al Pacino, Donald Sutherland, Nastassja Kinski, Joan Plowright, Dave King

VHS : Revolution (1985)
I think its easily the best movie about the American Revolution. The A&E videos of TV pressentations of "The Crossing" and "Benedict Arnold" are also very good. While how good it is is a matter of opinion, anyone who thinks that Gibson's silly movie is better doesn't know much about American history. This movie has the feeling of the 1770s and the criticism of Pacino's and Kinsky's accents is amusing. The residents of the americas came from every corner of the earth and regional accents were numerous. Who knows how anyone sounded?

The real disappointment is that the available Portuguese region one dvd has very disappointing video quality. But at least it IS widescreen. But I am looking forward to a decent U.S. release. I suspect the dvd import is pirated.

But its great how controversial ... Read More

9.The Hunley starring: Armand Assante, Donald Sutherland, Alex Jennings, Chris Bauer, Gerry Becker

VHS : The Hunley
This movie shows the first ever successful use of a true submarine in naval combat. Human history (for the literally the entire planet) was changed thereby. The one small drawback of this work may be that the truly profound implications of submarine warfare are not given nearly enough emphasis. Instead the events of the Hunley are sometimes forced to take a back seat to run of the mill movie themes: Dixon's love of his "Queenie", the Politics of Military generals, etc. Be that as it may, I loved this movie and highly recommend it. Five out of five stars!

10.Wings starring: Richard Arlen, Clara Bow, El Brendel, Thomas Carrigan, Margery Chapin

VHS : Wings
A film that hits just about every human emotion in the repertoire and
does so surprisingly well, although there is some overeagerness amongst the callow youth. The biggest surprise of all, however, is just how
enchanting Clara Bow is as the very sexy girl next door. While obviously men's tastes in women differ, it is still rather difficult to believe that Charles Rogers wasn't at least infatuated with his next door neighbor. Clara's personality is just as attractive as her looks. Watching
her is by far the most pleasant part of the film. If only women were around like her these days...
