VHS : Woodstock - 3 Days of Peace & Music (The Director's Cut)
Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music was far from the straightforward Discovery Channel-type documentary that I imagined. There was none of the typical narrative, offsite interviews of resource persons, or anything post-event.

This film was made at the very heart of the festival, making the 3 or so hours of footage feel indeed like 3 days, as it spanned across all sub-plots of the event. There were closeup shots of the musical performances down to the foot-tapping, the literally dirty fingers tuning the guitars, and hands wildly beating on the bongo drums. There were casual interviews with the young organizers at work, the bewildered (some annoyed) locals, the toilet cleaner who took great pride in making the portalets "pleasanter" for the kids, and all kinds of hippies, some ... Definitely one of the best Vietnam war movies out there. It is more about the psychological trama of the Vienam war which I liked. It can seem a little out there from time to time but that's to get the viewer to understand it from the main character's point of view. This is definitely not for the younger kids out there and it is pretty intense. It is a must have for any DVD collection. It is one of those classic movies everyone has to see at least once. The acting is amazing. Just an overall great movie.

Some noncomplimentary reviews have been written here by people who, from what I conclude after reading their comments, did not actually serve in Vietnam. I did serve with the USMC around the DaNang area in 1969-70. After seeing most of the Vietnam war movies, I feel that this movie is the most realistic of how it really was over there. Why is there still no DVD of this movie?

In "The Things They Carried", Tim O'Brien combines images from his personal experiences with thoughtful storytelling in order to capture the reader's imagination and take them into a world which they may never otherwise see. A world created out of the chaos and confusion that exists as a result of war and internal emotional conflicts. He calls it a work of fiction.
As a war veteran I can appreciate the struggle of how challenging it is to tell a true war story. To bring back its character and relive it. Not merely to verbalize it, but to actually illustrate the story with words. An observer will never truly understand the moral, the underlying points, or even the emotional effects, unless they have lived it. You could tell someone a million different stories about how the dead look, what they smell like, ... Read More

In the 1970s, Hollywood came out with some "vengeance" movies. Another one that comes to mind is "The Farmer," which I saw with a group of buddies at the (Air Force) base theater.

Anyway, while "Rolling Thunder" might be short on military protocol (sloppy salutes and ill-fitting uniforms), it's long on what you would expect from this genre.

The bad guys are bad: Dirty rotten scoundrels in need of a shave and full of greed. They hang out in seedy bars and whorehouses and wear filthy shirts and have bad teeth. You get the sense that exterminating them is the right thing to do.

William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones are the anti-heroes. Icy cold. resolute and only after the bad guys. They don't lay a finger on a good guy.

The film slows down in a couple of parts, as it tries to ... Read More

I give this uber low-budget Vietnam movie a salute for showing the Enemy side of the conflict through an objective lens. I've watched alot of Vietnam movies, most of which suffer from low-budget historical inaccuracies in weapons, uniforms, vehicles: mainly because its no longer possible to acquire all US-Vietnam era gear from renting third world armories, like in the Philipines. This movie has those flaws but most war movies w/out big budgets from the 80's did, so bear that in mind.

The intro shows the main character, Han, a Viet Cong, snipe down to 2 Americans in the triple canopy forest: they all look like just kids...Beau Bridges plays an American officer who eventually falls into the hands of the Viet Cong. Han is forced to take him on a forced march back to his communist superiors; away from a meglomaniac ... Read More
