VHS : The African Queen
What a work of art! This is one of the best movies of all time. When the spinster missionary woman (Hepburn) must TOLERATE Mr. Arnaut (Bogart)
in their life-threatening trip down the river in a beat-up old boat, The African Queen, the fun begins. She can drum up no respect for this man--until she realizes that he is an intelligent person who may be able to save their lives by his cool wit. He good naturedly sloughs off her constant criticism, while she endures his slovenly ways and colorful language. At some point they start developing a strong like for each other. When Bogie finally shaves, well you know romantic sparks are about to fly. Movies or stories do not come any better than this.

VHS : Sergeant York
This film begins in the Cumberland Valley of Tennessee. It shows some men on horses shooting revolvers. The rest of the film shows York never owning an expensive horse or revolver! People are singing in a chapel. There are scenes of country life in those backwoods, a hard life for many. There is entertainment in a rural tavern. The pastor warns Alvin York against his crooked path. Do the wealthy look down on the poor? Alvin makes a down payment on that bottom land. Men go around armed. Alvin works hard to earn the rest of the money. Alvin plans to win the shooting match and win the big prize. Percussion cap muzzle loaders are used. Pastor Pyle counsels Alvin against his anger. But Alvin sulks. Riding on a stormy night a flash of lightning gives a warning. Alvin gets religion. The lost sheep is found ... Read More

"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. [This slow-paced action doesn't seem too funny to me.] Comedy is in part cultural, and attitudes change. Perhaps the humor is in suggesting the clothes make the man or woman? Or what looks ... 4.Wings starring: Richard Arlen, Clara Bow, El Brendel, Thomas Carrigan, Margery Chapin

A film that hits just about every human emotion in the repertoire and
does so surprisingly well, although there is some overeagerness amongst the callow youth. The biggest surprise of all, however, is just how
enchanting Clara Bow is as the very sexy girl next door. While obviously men's tastes in women differ, it is still rather difficult to believe that Charles Rogers wasn't at least infatuated with his next door neighbor. Clara's personality is just as attractive as her looks. Watching
her is by far the most pleasant part of the film. If only women were around like her these days...

Very few movies are truly works of art. This is one of them. There are no explosions that throw bodies through the air, no sensational car crashes, no severed human limbs. Rather there is a plot that unfolds on its own good time, well drawn characters, excellently written dialogue, perfect atmosphere, and gorgeous photography.

Still, I understand why some might find the film objectionable. There is nudity, even nudity of a pubescent girl. There is open talk of sex. And some quasi moralists are more offended by that than by graphic violence. Sex, of course, is part of life and is legal, but it must not be shown or suggested very clearly. Murder, on the other hand, is illegal but is shown every night on TV with little protest from the moralists.

The acting here is seamless. ... Read More

I saw this movie as a child when it first came out, and have been looking for a copy of it for years. I even wrote to Ms Whitley, and other video vendors with no luck. Then in a last ditch effort, I tried Amazon.com, and it was truly a Miracle when I saw that it was in stock! Watching it again after 50 years was just like the first time. It is now a part of my DVD Library, and my heart, thanks to Amazon.com

When I was a lot younger I watched this on tv and had been searching for it since. I think it was well made for that time period. Two people in love and how they have to deal with a father not wanting them together. I just love this movie. The music in it is wonderful also. It is so worth the price I paid to have it.

VHS : Dawn Patrol (1938)
Truly an enjoyable WWI movie. The aerial scenes were outstanding (Note: These were borrowed from the 1930 movie by the same name). The casting was on the mark. Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, David Niven and Donald Crisp (Excellent actor) were perfectly cast. Plus, the brief but well acted role of the captured German aviator by Carl Esmond. The pressures and guilt of being a squadron commander and sending friends, colleagues, and inexperienced pilots against overwhelming odds to certain death. Then coping with the aftermath and being blamed and taking blame for their deaths. Being a responsible leader was a difficult and lonely job which leads to coping methods such as heavy drinking to get numb to it. This movie does a remarkable job of showing how courageous the WWI pilots were in going up on a daily basis on sorties knowing that ... Read More

1930's movies are a hobby for me. I have seen thousands. It is obvious that the overwhelming majority were made for one purpose-- to maximize profits. To do this they were "designed" to give the public what it wanted--and still wants, i.e., bigger than life movie stars, a few endlessly repeated popular themes, shamelessly uncomplicated scripts, formula directing. In the 30's, they were the ultimate mindless escape entertainment for hard times. For these reasons (and the black and white, 4:3 format), most of my friends think I am wasting my time with these "old movies." I can't really defend myself and don't try. I am having a good time.

The Eagle and the Hawk is different from what I just described. It isn't a great, but it is a far better movie than the standard fare today. Roger's and Miller's screenplay was ... Read More
