VHS : Learn to Sail
Colgate seems to be conducting the video off the cuff. It appears to be a single camera shoot. Because of the lack of scripting the video wavers in content. Colgate is not a natural in front of the camera and appears to be a bit of a task master. For example when the 80's actors/stundents make up commands for tasks that need no command, Colgate fails to realize the fun in this and insists on eliminating the commands. There are several gaffs in the film which make for unwitting humor. An example is when Colgate describes tieing a square knot as easy and the actors disagree. This is followed by a quick edit and on to the next scene leaving us to sumise that the actors were scolded for making Colgate look bad and the scene removed. Bearing these points in mind it is still an informative ... Read More

This is a very fine film. There are more than 15 veterans of famous ocean races from around the world interviewed between segments of footage from "on board offshore" in seas ranging from 12-20 feet, with all the important major points covered. There are some short bits of footage from round the world races from bigger seas as well. The emphasis here is on newer sleeker fin keel designs from the last 20 years though even the owner of an older sailboat w/o much on board heavy sea experience should find the review helpfull. The production itself is First Class!

For anyone with no prior sailing experience, this is a great place to start. I didn't know a thing about sailing and now I'm tacking and turning and using all the lingo as I go. I learned a great deal from this. Thanks.

I received this video a year ago and have watched it countless times. Although the sailors were different ages, from different countries, and from vastly different backgrounds, they all focused on the common cause of circumnavigating while alone;but the clincher was that it was a race, not a leisurely sail. Self-filmed Video is broadly used, and communications by radio helped them communicate, as did newer innovations like email. Mishaps and dangerous circumstances along with some personal disasters lace the film along with interesting personal mini-biographies. I'm going to follow their footsteps, and go around alone.

We learned how to sail last summer through [...], and found this video to be very useful to review before heading out onto the water this summer. Like mentioned above, it is divided into 30-minute segments which makes it easily digestable.

VHS : Infinite Voyage: Sail on Voyager
This movie shows most of the remarkable discoveries by Voyager on its trip to the outer reaches of the solar system. It follows the scientists at the Jet Propulson Laboratories as they received and interpreted images and data from Voyager, and makes it personable. The trials and tribulations of the launch and journey are discussed by the scientists who designed the trip and worked on the problems as they arose. Voyager's flight path and the reasons for choosing the launch window and path are shown so that non-scientists can understand. I teach high school astronomy, and use this as an introduction to the solar system. I have also used it in elementary grades (third and up) and the kids love it!

8.Sail Away starring: Alex, Aubrey, Calvin, Carlos, Charlotte

VHS : Setting Sail: The Star of India Goes to Sea
This video is an excellent representation of what it takes to keep one of the old square riggers sailing. For anyone wishing to crew a windjammer, this video will show what it is really like. The scenes of crew working aloft are excellently done and show what handling a square rigger entails. I am a STAR OF INDIA crew member and have been where the personnel in the video have been. It really is like that.
