Restorers' Error

What the restorers of Rear Window don't know is that there exist two dream sequences in the first part of the movie.

The first takes place after Grace Kelly leaves, and James Stewart has heard the scream from across the courtyard. Thelma Ritter, Grace Kelly, and the courtyard are shown while dialogue from Thelma Ritter's argument with Stewart about Lisa, and Lisa's argument with Stewart, are heard with an echo. The composer's new song is heard.

The second takes place after Stewart has waked up and noticed the salesman taking a suitcase out during the rain, coming back, and taking the suitcase out again. The composer's song is heard over the image which shows the salesman arguing with his wife, the artist neighbor telling the salesman he ... Read More

VHS : Seconds (1966)
I remember seeing this movie when I was 14 yrs old. It had a great impact on me(of coures at 14, in the 1960s you'd have to be practically dead, not to be influenced by what was going on in San Fransico). I still think about it from time to time and happened to catch it on tv the other night. The only thing that no one seems to mention, is that John Randolph didn't have much of a choice to stay the way he was. He was blackmailed by the "company" showing a black and white film of him rapeing a young woman. Still it was a great performance by Rock Hudson and the other actors or course. I would watch it again from time to time, if I would allow myself to pay that much for a movie. Thank goodness for cable. Great movie.

VHS : Rebecca
Alfred Hitchcock continually delivers to viewers a memorable experience whether you are viewing his movies for the first time or seeing them as if for the first time.

Rebecca is a moody mystery with plots and twists that keep you involved until the sobering end of the movie. Just when you thought you have figured out what keeps Maxim DeWinter out of reach to his lovely bride, the plot twists again. Joan Fontaine is supurb as the new Mrs. DeWinter, trying desperately to understand what keeps her new husband in constant turmoil, and herself trying to compete for his love and affection with the deceased first wife.

The English settings along with a masterful supporting cast makes this selection certainly one you will want to add to your collection of Hitchcock movies to own. ... Read More

VHS : Laura (1944)
The presence of Vincent Price alone is enough to make this film worth watching. The man had one of the most memorable theatrical personalities that ever graced the screen. His voice rang like a haunting tones cutting through fog. His smallest gestures expressed volumes of expression and emotion. Even when he overacted (which was much of the time) he did it with a singular type of flair that made it engaging rather than laughable. He had style. He had flair. And he had panache. That's a star. That's what makes an icon. His role in "Laura" shows yet another facet of his abilities. His characterization of Shelby Carpenter is of a man who's weak yet charming and fickle yet strangely loyal. It's a complex role and he managed it with the aplomb typical of his bearing. It's no surprise that his presence is dominant ... Read More

VHS : Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)
This October 2008 DVD release of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1945) is a welcome presentation of a somewhat neglected film. The DVD features acceptable (though not perfect) image and sound. There is a disappointingly rambling and unfocused Commentary track featuring Angela Lansbury (who is poised and gracious, but whose role in the film is fairly slight) and Steve Haberman (who is very uneven in his information). This Commentary could have benefited from greater editing and compression: much is unsaid and there are times when the comments are not focused on the scene at hand. There is also a bonus cartoon and short.

The real loss here is a lack of information about the painters who created the portraits of Dorian Gray used in the film (Ivan Albright did the grotesquely decomposed version, which ... Read More

VHS : Dial M for Murder
One of Alfred Hitchcock's classic films. Ray Milland is exceptionally good. Dimitry Tiomkin was one of the finest Hollywood film composers; however, in my humble opinion, there are some scenes in the movie, which could've used more suspenseful music.

VHS : The Detective (aka "Father Brown")
"What are you really after, your cross or my soul?" asks the international art thief, Flambeau, of Father Brown.
"Both, of course," Father Brown replies.
"Well, come and find us," Flambeau says. "I'll make you a bargain. Whatever you can find you shall have."
"I accept your bargain," Father Brown says, and we're off into a gentle, amusing and thoughtful movie which stars Alec Guinness as Father Brown and Peter Finch as Flambeau.

Father Brown is a parish priest in an English village. He takes care of his flock, saves the souls he can, and tries to put the erring members on more wholesome paths. He also is eccentric -- or at least very honest. He practices karate, loves mysteries, is very near-sighted, is no one's fool and has great but realistic empathy. "I'm disappointed in you, Bert." ... Maurice Micklewhite (Michael Caine) has always been one of my favorite actors. I saw this 007 Era movie when it was first released and watched it again more recently. It is a FAB movie. It has lost nothing over time and can even be more appreciated today. Caine is very magnetic as the oh so sexy but slightly nerdy instrument of espionage. A great, suspenseful movie that is effective without all the 007 gimmicks.
