VHS : Psycho (1960)
I have never forgotten this movie from the first time I saw it in a theater. The shower scene scared me along with a lot of others there. At the time I had a Ford like Janet Leigh drove in the movie and would not open the trunk for a couple of weeks. I have it on tape and just had to add the Special Edition to my DVD collection of Hitchcock movies. It is one of his best. The fools that thought they could remake this movie were nuts. Part of what makes the movie so good is that it is in black and white. Besides no one can out do the master when it comes to mystery and the way he seemed to know the best actors for the roles. No one was as good at playing a Psycho as Tony Perkins.

VHS : The Secret Agent (1936)
Only for fans of Hitch. Very dated for today's audience. Slow pace and confusing character development, especially Peter Lorre's "General". Stiff portrayals and a surprising lack of suspense. Where's a Macguffin when you need one?

"Champagne" is one of about a dozen silent films directed by Alfred Hitchcock at the beginning of his career, and as this film was produced in 1928 when silent films had matured and developed into a fine art, it rates quite highly as a silent film in general. Most impressive, I found, were the photography and some innovative effects with the camera, as well as nice sets and good acting. Unlike Hitchcock's more famous mystery suspense thrillers of later decades, "Champagne" is a fairly light-hearted story with an unexpected touch of good humour now and then (which Hitchcock often liked to employ in other films as well). The story revolves around a spoilt and selfish daughter of a wealthy business tycoon who could use a lesson in learning how `the other half' lives, as well as testing her lover's true ... Read More

This is a tragic, woeful tale-very early Hitchcock.

We are introduced to the fine actor, Carl Brisson. His performance is super-expressive (expected, considering it's a silent film), however, his is a performance to be remembered. You really root for this guy, especially when his Woman does him wrong. Carl is the backbone of this dreadully long, long, tragedy.

Don't get me wrong, Anny does her part too! When she mouths, "I am having a baby" directly to the viewer, I was delighted.

You'll notice the pacing and editing of the movie are frustrating, however, in its entirety, i still believe this film works. It's a rarity, and something I'm glad to have watched. I only wish Mr. Brisson had produced more than three films before his untimely (and early) death.

I'm actually a fan of "NUMBER 17", I like Hitchcock's use of light & shadow to create the mood. Yes it is a little slow & stagey, but I get engrosed by the visuals.

And there lies the problem with this Laserlight/Delta DVD. The picture quality is horrible, full of digital artifacting that makes the picture appear to freeze in sections then play again. The details get lost in the pixilation. How can you enjoy a visually engrosing movie if it looks terrible.

I have an old Japanese Laserdisc of this movie, and it looks much better!
Japanese videos are NTSC format, so they will play on U.S. televisions. I would rather watch the Japanese Laserdisc with Japanese subtitles on screen that this awful Laserlight/Delta DVD.

And about "THE RING", Studio Canal / Lionsgate has ... Read More

Hitchcock co-wrote this British comic thriller early in his career and it is very entertaining. Based on a Jefferson Farjeon play about a hobo stumbling across a body at Number 17 on a windy night, Hitchcock compensated for the smaller budget often afforded him during this period in Britain with droll humor and the lighting of photographers John J. Cox and Bryan Langley. The results are fun to watch.

Leon M. Lion is excellent and quite amusing as the bum who has the misfortune of entering Number 17 and discovering the body. John Stuart is also fine as Gilbert Fordyce, a mystery man who comes across the body only moments after Ben (Lion) does. Before they can collect their thoughts a young girl (Ann Casson) quite literally drops through the ceiling into Fordyce's arms. Her father has gone missing and only a telegram ... Read More
