VHS : Psycho (1960)
I have never forgotten this movie from the first time I saw it in a theater. The shower scene scared me along with a lot of others there. At the time I had a Ford like Janet Leigh drove in the movie and would not open the trunk for a couple of weeks. I have it on tape and just had to add the Special Edition to my DVD collection of Hitchcock movies. It is one of his best. The fools that thought they could remake this movie were nuts. Part of what makes the movie so good is that it is in black and white. Besides no one can out do the master when it comes to mystery and the way he seemed to know the best actors for the roles. No one was as good at playing a Psycho as Tony Perkins.

VHS : Psycho 4
Psycho IV is basically an attempt to squeeze one last movie from the series, and keep the Bates character alive. Norman Bates is listening to a talk show on the radio when they just happen to begin talking about matricide - killing one's mother. They are interviewing a doctor whose career and sphere of expertise deals with the same subject. Norman seems to be a bit irritated with the direction of the show, so he calls in to give his history.

Quickly enough it is discovered that Norman killed his mother, and kept her corpse for the conversational value - basically Weekend at Bernie's with murder. Medically speaking, Norman is a friggin loon, and a danger to society. It's this complete insanity, and the suggestions from his "mother", which led him to being a schizophrenic, cross ... Read More

VHS : Psycho 2
Psycho II has so many great things going for it. First, the cast was excellent! Anthony Perkins and Vera Miles from the original film return along with Meg Tilly and Robert Loggia. It's too bad Meg Tilly retired from acting. I'm not clear on the reasons, but this Oscar-nominated actress had the talent to make more of a career for herself which was too short-lived. I fell in love with the musical score of this film. It's sad, haunting and beautiful to listen to. Another tragedy is that this soundtrack is no longer available. Psycho II rises above most sequels in its sophistication and intelligence. There is a small amount of killing and bloodshed because this film is more psychological (we would hope given the title) and character-driven. The scene where Anthony Perkins and Meg Tilly are in the bedroom ... Read More
