Lone fathers and their kids have been a hit in many movies. I have severl examples, like, Ryan and Tatum O'Neil in Paper Moon, Jon Voight and Ricky Schroeder in the re-make of 'The Champ' and Dustin Hoffman and Justin Henry in Kramer vs Kramer. Gregory Peck, won an Academy Award, for playing a sole parent, and he's never been better. The script for this movie was based upon Harper Lee's sensitive and intelligent novel set in racially-torn Alabama. Gregory Peck, plays Atticus Finch, a wise lawyer bravely raising his two kids Jem(Phillip Alford) and Scout(Mary Badham) in the hot-headed Southern town. The crux of the plot is Finch's defence of a colored man accused of rape. The film was put together by two excellent film-makers, producer Alan J. ... Read More

VHS : Evening Star
By the time Jack Nicholson shows up for about five minutes of screen time as Garrett Breedlove, this turgid 1996 sequel to 1983's Terms of Endearment has already slogged through two deaths, a psychotherapist with an Oedipal complex, and a lot of scrapbooks. The problems with this shamelessly manipulative movie are many, and they all begin with the inevitable premise that tough Texas matron Aurora Greenway can carry on without being challenged by her feisty daughter Emma. However, without Debra Winger's earthy grit counterbalancing Shirley MacLaine's flamboyant disapproval, the story seems to work in a vacuum. Much of the appeal and resonance of the first film came from how these characters dealt with life's unpredictable course and how James L. Brooks captured their idiosyncrasies with a refreshing level ... Read More

I haven't seen this movie in years, but I remember it was very good when I saw it. I haven't bought the vhs version because I'm waiting for the DVD release. There are still a lot of movies made in the 80s and prior that are excellent but still have not been released on DVD and this is one of them. Great stuff between the two main characters. DVD please!

This movie warmed my heart and I am wondering why it never made it into the theaters,at least in my part of the country. Pierce Brosnan did a fantastic job as Desmond Doyle. Sophie Vavasseur's portraial of Evelyn's simple and guileless faith was touching. The movie presented the very real feel of Europe in the 50s. I grew up in Germany. The little touches, like Desmond heating up milk, brought back memories (hot milk with dry congealed "skin" was a breakfast staple before pasteurization). The central point though was the battle of the little man against the sometimes insane, rigid rules of the day - which few people of that era had the guts to challenge. I was cheering for Desmond all the way and was glad that this true story had a happy end.

VHS : Rose Tattoo
Burt Lancaster is one of my all-time favorite actors. But it is painful to watch him in this movie. His terrible accent jumps between Sicily and the Bronx. He is "Elmer Gantry" without the proper role or dialogue to match his performance or ability. He is terribly miscast and unconvincing as Alvaro to Anna Magnani's Serafina.

It is no coincidence that for a movie that won three Oscars and received an additional five nominations Lancaster received no recogniton whatsoever from the Academy. He is as convincing an Italian as Donald Trump would be if he tried to act like a modest man.

Magnani won the academy award as Best Actress for her performance in a very bad year for movies (1955). In "The Rose Tattoo" she merely bounces from one emotional outburst to the next, screaming and ... Read More

Okay, so I'm not here to debate whether or not Christina Crawford's memoir was accurate or not, or whether or not this movie portrays Crawford in a light worthy of her because I never knew her and so I cannot judge. I hear people defend this film and its interpretation of the screen legend, and then I hear people ambush this film as if it were a production of the antichrist.

Fact remains that the film, regardless of authentic merit, is really bad.

That isn't to say that it isn't entertaining, for if I said that I'd be lying; but the film is far from a great movie. It is a camp classic, but the sad part is that that was not the films initial intent. No, this was supposed to be a dramatic representation of child abuse, and instead it became a nightmarish comedy. Every scene is over ... Read More

I think this movie was made before Ron Howard played the role of "Opie Taylor" on the Andy Griffith Show, regardless, he is ADORABLE in this movie. He plays the role very well as a little boy growing up without a mother as he tries to fix his father up with dates. It like an earlier version of Sleepless in Seattle. It's a good wholesome "family" movie to watch.
