I love this movie. I haven't seen it in years and I am dismayed to learn that it isn't available on DVD yet. This is one of the best teen movies I have ever seen. It's sweet, honest, funny and kind.

Please release Angus on DVD soon powers that be. Thanks!

VHS : Shadowlands (1993)
When C.S.Lewis, author of such books as "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" was only a small boy of 9, his mother died and he learned that his only way through the pain and loneliness was to encase himself in an impenetrable shell, so that pain could not touch him. He leads an ordered, safe life as an Oxford Don, singing in the cathedral choir and lecturing to audiences of adoring women readers. When he meets American writer, Joy Gresham, her brash, New York, Jewish forthrightness almost batters him but luckily he summons enough courage to begin a friendship. He agrees to marry her so as to allow her and her son to remain in England and gradually she softens his defences and becomes part of his life as a platonic friend. When they discover that Joy is dying from incurable cancer, Lewis realises ... Read More

VHS : Madame X (1966)
So many people seem to like this film - Madame X. I don't. I 've seen
it on television and am glad I never saw it in a theater in 1966.
The cast is excellent (Lana Turner, John Forsythe, Burgess Meredith,
Ricardo Montalban, Joan Whats-Her-Name)but the plot and the schmaltzy
dialogue plus the tear-jerking conclusion leave me laughing and that's it.
Why was this movie made ? And as late as 1966. This is a 1940'-50's film,
in my opinion, and outdated by the Sixties. But so many people seem to like
it. Sentimentality. Sob, sob, sob......You can have Madame X. This should have been made as a farce....

Leonardo Dicaprio's performance as an autistic teenager was absolutely superb. Johnny Depp's performance as a quiet, depressed and angst-ridden older brother was good as well, although he's more fun to look at than anything.:) The movie is very moving, and unlike anything I've seen. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to people of all ages.

VHS : In the Gloaming
"In The Gloaming" is an excellent HBO production based on the story by Alice Elliott Dark. First time director Christopher Reeve tackled this challenging story about a young man with AIDS who comes back to the home of his wealthy parents to die. This drama only takes 62 minutes, but it packs an emotional wallop as the main characters have to come to terms with both their past relationships and the people they have become.

Robert Sean Leonard (who you may recognize from "House") plays the young terminally ill man, and steals the show. He brings almost painful poignancy to the role without appearing to be a caricature of suffering. Most of his time is spent with his mother, Glenn Close, who does a good job as the caring, though formerly distant, mother. The scenes these two share are astoundingly good. Also ... Read More

VHS : Mask
`Mask' is the type of film that moves you to tears. It is genuinely sweet and sincere and heartbreaking as well as heartwarming. It is true that the film can, at times, feel forced and manipulative, but who doesn't like having their feelings manipulated in this manner. The true story of Rocky Dennis is inspirational and poignant and one that we all should take to heart; and `Mask' gives us the opportunity to do just that.

The film recounts the final year of Rocky's life. Growing up with a rare disease (craniodiaphyseal dysplasia) was not easy for Rocky, but with the support from his very strong and very loving mother Rusty, Rocky was able to make it through. Teased by other kids and humiliated by teachers, Rocky learned at a young age to form a thick skin, and his mother's defensive and free-spirited attitude ... Read More

VHS : Shell Seekers
While I realize that this is a nice movie albeit it only 98 minutes, it is NOT the Shell Seekers. Anyone who loves this story-I have just reread it for the 7th time, will be very dissappointed. The story is totally butchered and even if Ms Pilcher approved the edits I dont care, it took out the depth and the incredible humanity of the original. The original is not sad, it is a tremendously uplifting and moving story. In addition to the dismantling of the story I believe the casting is particularly poor, not my image of the wonderfully dynamic characters in the book at all. While I love Angela Lansbury she has had to portray a Penelope that is a confused and melancholy old lady-not the vivacious and independent Penelope of the book -The most outrageous affront is the treatment of the role of Richard-that was the heart of the orginal and here its ... VHS : Ordinary People
Like watching a bunch of 4-year-olds throwing temper tantrums about early bedtimes. The main characters in this film spend their time either sulking petulantly or delivering semi-coherent, self-indulgent speeches.

The movie is nonetheless well-shot, with some superb scoring to Pachelbel's Canon. Indeed, the opening montage, in which scenery shots dissolve to the choir performing, is great. It also gives interesting insight into its era. But Ice Storm revisited that kind of material with less emoting, as did Stand By Me. If this movie had been cut by an hour, with the talking/whining elided, it could have been great.
